I bought the lower tv model last year and it has been wonderful. It has a little bit of distortion on the edges depending on screen action when in 4:3 mode but not noticable when using the HDMI input. This is also the newer model so it may not even have that problem.

The one I bought HERE for $387.99 OTD.

Also my last thread of the other tv alot of poeple were calling a $400 hd tv crap and I took it apart last month to make some adjustments to my liking (I do it to almost all my tv's) and my tv must really suck because it has a Samsung Tube :p
I know samsung is known for making crappy tvs so I did wrong buying mine when I did. Please dont tell me, your meter is broken ;)

Dont know if these have the sammy tubes in them but mine does 100%. But for $400 and on a budget you cannot beat this tv at all. I havent had one lick of trouble and I did hook up my tv to my pc through a dvi to hdmi adapter and it didnt work all that well. But my $35 cyberhome upconverting to 1080i dvd player looks sweet as hell on it :D

Picture quailty (except for the slight distortion but you get used to it to the point you wont even notice it) is to die for and mine showed up looking brand new without a scratch or missing anything at all.

there is a HUGE diff in pic quality when using a upconverting dvd player. I would never guessed it but switching back and forth on my player is like night and day going through the HDMI input. Color isperfect and would be as close to HD as your going to get without shelling out several hundred for a player and new movies. IMO of course but if you get it get a upconverting player and you will agree.

You got the right to refuse it when it shows and you inspect it. Nothing says you have to take it for it comes direct from Phillips. If it looks like crap or doesnt work have them box it back up and take it right back and wait for another one.

Your better off saving your money and buying something better. Had this tv and the black version which was the newer model and was such a pain to return it back to walmart back and forth. The picture quality sucked in hd on my xbox 360.

Amazon Cust. Reviews

I read some of thoes stories and why the hell didnt they check it before the shipping people left. Thats thier own damn faults. I can see little scratches on it but if you dont open and turn it on while the people are there and you later do it finding it had been droped or doesnt work you have no one else to blame but yourself. They brought mine I made them wait the lousy 5 minutes to open it up, plg it in and turn it on, and then lift the heavy sucker to the top of my armore(sp) that stands over 5 feet tall.

You get this tv you do the same make them wait. Im sure some may have minor scratches, hell is a $400 refurb, but if you open it and it looks to be droped with the case cracked and doesnt work thst not what you paid for and have them take it back. Plain and simple ;)

As far as HD my hd reciever and my upconverting dvd player gives is an outstanding picture. Clean, crisp, greas colors and sharpness.

Hooked up to my computer not so great. No res past 800x600 for mine for some reason but I was also using the DVI to HDMI input and a video card. Should of tried the composit I suppose.

Regular content looked fine to me. I had a Olivia 30" lcd and reg tv looked pretty bad liek water colors and wasnt nearly as bad or noticable with the Phillips.

I've been burned by Philips on refurbed TV's. They suck big time, come with scratches and will start to fail even before the warranty. My local Philips repair "dealer" sent a crack head to take a look. He just demagnetized the screen and just said BS. I was out for a couple of months with the Army so I wasn't able to follow up and the warranty expired. My opinion: STAY AWAY!!!!

I bought a refurb'd 30PW8402 last year, it was about $450 w/tax. I have had zero problems with it, and the HD picture is very nice. Cosmetically, it has only a small dent in the bottom edge of the plastic base, big hairy deal. I would have NO problem buying another...and this one's a year newer model, and even cheaper! :Q Great way to get in the HD door for cheap.

I also got one of these (edit: the black 30PW9110D version) about 6 months ago. Mine did have a repaired crack in the corner but it's hard to see unless you look in the right light. I do feel that I got lucky with mine as it has always had a perfect picture (at least so far). After I ordered mine I found this thread at AVs forums and discovered many had problems. Perhaps I just lucked out.
There is much information (like service manuals) in the thread at AVs forum linked above.

I've had nothing but problems with my Philips Refurb. There is a TON of flickering taking place whenever I try to use the HDMI. It's a little less prominent on Component, but you can still notice it (enough to drive you nuts). Philips gave me 5-6 places to call, and each place said either A) They wouldn't pick it up or B) They don't service Philips. Their warranty is a JOKE. Buyer Beware!

I got in the last time this was around. and first they would not wait for me to plug it in and actually i had to sign for it before i took it inside my house, regardless everything seemed fine but then i start getting this wierd pixelating problem , its like the screen wouldnt render (on regular cable) well i called them and they siad its normal? Normal.....well maybe while changing channels but not on the same channel .. point being they would not repair it.. so i just sent it back to them called them couple days later and asked whats up with my rma they had no clue well the tv i sent back got there and they sent me a new "refurbed" one. that had no issues at all.
I would have no issues getting another one except its to darn heavy for me to move myself.

I would like to see the black one but the one in the link looks just like mine

I bought one of these in march. Everything was fine during the 90 day warrenty period, but not long after 3 months, started having huge geometry problems. Now I have to go in the service menu and adjust it at least once a week, and its still never anywhere near ideal. Lots of distortion on the edges and the picture 'caves in' the longer it is on. Save you pennies and buy something better.

I bought one of these about a year ago for $399. Excellent TV for the price. Image quality is great and everything worked perfectly except one thing: the hdmi port. Other than that i'm very satisfied. A friend of mine has a $900 LG crt hdtv of the same size and there is seriously little to no difference between the sets, we both agreed on it. The only thing that is truly wrong with these sets is they seem to be hit-or-miss. Some people get half working sets, some people get sets with a really bad image, some people get sets that dont work at all. For those of you who are thinking about buying one, i'd say you shouldnt just because of the risk. I personally got lucky.

Not trying to thread crap but I do want to give my opinion on conventional crt HDTV's. I bought a 30" Sanyo crt HDTV from wally world about 2 years ago. It's got a great picture and it's served me well. But with the great deals out there on 32" LCD's I really would not consider buying another conventional CRT. The 30" CRT's weigh a ton and they all seem to have a tendency to suffer some edge distortion and barrel roll. The colors are bright and vivid but for a nominal extra fee I'd suggest a slightly larger 32" LCD. Just my 2 cents.

How come you only seem to hear about Phillips pushing out so many refurbs? What do all of the other manufacturers do with theirs (or do they just not have as many as Phillips?)

RBC, well, Philips is also one of the larger TV manufacturers out there so they probably have more units than smaller manufacturers. And other large manufacturers might try to dump more on home turf? (this is a complete guess-so don't reply with some insane flame about how you lived in South Korea for years and never saw Samsung try to sell refurbs) Who knows.

However, they are also kind of known for shoddy TV quality issues, so that would likely explain the other reason for why you always see Philips dumping refurbs =P

Shoddy TV Quality. I beg to differ on that because I opened my tv up and its got a Samsung tube along with Samsung parts. Now unless I am wrong isnt Samsung one of the leaders in TV manufacturing?

Not trying to sound like I am pushing these its just that when something goes wrong for a few you hear from them and no really the masses that got something right. I believe yes with anything out there your going to have something go wrong but alot of people are getting off topic. Its a $400 hd tv. YES there may be better, yes there is some edge distortion but thats the norm with almost ALL tv's HD or not you just never saw it on your old 4:3 screen because the edges were streched slightly and this being a widescreen and in 4:3 mode its not streched past where you cant see it for its out there for you to see unless you strech a norm pict to wodescreen and it looks all funky. But aside of that again it is a $400 tv. If one can afford more they would. They would but a lcd or dlp or buy me I cost a million dollar and will clean youre dink. This is a way to get into HD, test the waters and see if your even going to like it without spending big bucks. Your in the market for a SDTV why spend $350 on a Sanyo no frills where atleast you can jump in for the same ammount and get HD with HDMI and if it is for you and you like it can go from there.

Its a refurb, Its only $400, it may have scrathes, it will def have some edge distortion and trust me you will forget it is even there after watching it for a bit unless your anal retentive and if thats the case WTF you doing even looking at a cheap tv you know your going to end up nit picking and bitch about how much it sucks. Buy it because yor in the need of a cheap tv and know that your buying a cheap tv and not some high dollar, high classy name brand, tv and you will actually enjoy it like alot of us have.
