Hi,

Please help.

I have just upgraded mb+cpu to a x4 805 from Frys...

using a Thermaltake R1 heatsink+fan

the hardware monitor show its running at 102 f , is that normal? what temperature should it be running?

Thank you!

102f is excellent. Normal is around 35-40 celcius, which may be higher than your reading. You have nothing to worry about.

Thanks o1die! I was thinking that 100f is hot for a GPU, also applies to CPU.

so if I oc, what temperature should I try to keep it below?

In GENERAL, as another poster mentioned, 30-40C is good @ idle, and Generally anything less than 80C at load is ok. The lower it is, the longer the chip will last. But if we're upgrading every 1-3 years anyway, longevity is really up to each end user with how important that is.

I have a Core i5 750 overclocked from 2.66 GHz to 4.0 GHz @ 1.36 V. I idle temp around 35C and have only hit about 61C under full load. If I started to approach 75-85C under load then it would be time to reduce voltage/clock speed or get a better cooling solution.

Most modern GPUs keep their fans quiet until the GPU hits 89 or 90C. I think CPUs have the same basic thermals but it comes down to the variances in programming of the active fan monitoring.

100F is cool for any chip in a computer (GPU, CPU)

Celsius is the most common measurement used in the computing world, so any temp monitors you have i would change to C and you will see much more in-line temps with people on the net.

Hey OP, I got that same Fry's combo I believe. Was it with a Gigabyte 790X board? Anyways, that's a great temp. I can reach mid-3ghz with my 805, but I backed off to 3.2ghz for 24/7, as once every couple of weeks I'd have something weird like a blank screen + reboot happen. Hopefully you can reach higher, I just hate FSB overclocking on these things, the black editions and the unlocked multis are so nice to have. Oh well, you'll be able to drop in a 9xx BE if you wish at some point.

Thank you all for the reply... my mistake on the F vs C conversion.

Arkaign, I got the MSI 785 board which is much cheaper for $69 and uses cheaper ddr2 memory. Not looking to extreme OC but I'm hoping to (if possiible) unlock the addtional LV3 cache, and perhaps go to 3ghz. hopefully my $14.99 Thermaltake R1 cooler can take it...

coming from a single core athlon, this combo is already tons faster... I'm just being greedy :D

I was able to unlock the extra 2 mb of lv 3 cache, which is great.

however, i was not able to OC past 2.8ghz... at 3ghz it refuses to boot into windows.

another problem is that I was unable to oc its onboard hd4200.,.. anyone know how?tyia

Try to change the memory clock to 667 or 533, that way when you increase the FSB, you're not running the ram way out of spec :)

thanks Arkaign, i'll try it with my new board.

I'm returning the MSI board to frys due to it not able to oc hd4200..
I really liked the board however the inability to oc is getting to me :(

bought a biostar , cost less ($59 on ewiz), allow oc , has 128mb integrated video memory, has more memory slots..etc
doesn't have hdmi but i dnt need it anyways.

will report back on oc results.

Thanks bro for making things more expensive for returning perfectly good products

I had a ton of trouble with the 805s till I set it at 266 and and 1.4V. If you keep loaded temps below say 60 all three of my 805s run at 3.3ish. With the unlocked l3 I have to put in a bit of extra Voltage to 1.45 I couldnt run above 235 but they seem happy at 266 for some reason. Reminds me of the serious fsb holes my evga 680i and q6600 had-just thinking about that board gives me the willies-

Core speed 3325
multi 12.5
bus 266
ht 2394
mem running at just under 1066

Decent ram made a TON of difference in getting stable above 2.8

not bad for 79 bucks....

Did you have to increase voltages besides the CPU voltage?

What's the safe range for voltage increases for the CPU/IMC/NB/Ram etc. etc.?

Every chip will be different but the higher the HT and bus speed the higher the NB and CPU voltage. Its actually very safe to fo 1.4 to 1.45 on either so a tad of extra sb juice can make things a bit more stable. Getting HT above 2400 does really help the speed so on my 955 I actually dropped the cpu speed to 3.7 from 3.8 and was able to push the NB to 2600+

Edit:

After some messing around with NB at 2600ish is fantastic, after a bit of reading over at XS they found that HT at 2000 was actually faster in 3d than higher, I kept NB at 2600 and lowered ht to 2k and nothing slowed down. Was able to drop volts on the NB a tad too.

ok, with my new mb and new cpu

x3 710, biostar TA785GE 128m

unlocked 4th core np, had to disable quiet 'n cool but thats no biggie for me
hd 4200 oc to 850mhz
cpu oc to 3029 mhz, havn't tried higher...

stock cooler stock voltage, idle temp is at 32 c, stress test max out at 60 c

is this acceptable temp range?

Which test gets it to 60? if its intel burn your fine, prime pushes mine to 54 with the stock cooler but I am using the heatpipe model from the 955 I got a few months back. The stock cooler that came with the b550 I used for a build for a friend was awful. It reminded me of the stock cooler that came with the thunderbirds and the single core athlon xps from ages ago.

What ram are you using jack?

i used this one http://www.pcworld.com/downloa...loads/description.html

prime95 only pushed it to 55 c

yes i do have the crappy athlon (no heatpipe) stock cooler... perhaps i should get a better cooler...

edit: damn, prime95 just reported error on core #4.. :( i guess i'm not lucky.. gonna disable and try again.

i'm using a single 2gb kingston hyperx 8500 ddr2 memory. got the last and only one left at frys. Frys is currently out of stock on ALL ddr2 memories.. :(

edit2: i'm gonna try increase the voltage as you said to 1.4 and 266mhz see how that goes...

btw hd4200 is awesome, at 850mhz its comparable to a hd3650 in speed.

it would be super nice if the 4th core works (further testing working), if not i'll just have to try to oc to ~3.5ghz

edit3: ok, so the 4th core is perfect.
However, when OC the 4th core return error, perhaps a problem w. my memory?
