Phenom/Spider platform

What got me thinking most was about the stability of the rig and the reviewers impressions of a speedy system.

"The Open GL standard test results were CB 3951, the single CPU render (using one core) of the image was CB 2177 and the multiple CPU render using all four cores was CB 7715. I realize it doesn?t compare directly, but my Intel QX6750 scored 5667 on the OpenGL standard test, 3064 on the single CPU render test, and 10639 on the multiple CPU render test using all four cores of the processor. "

Ummm kentsfield pwned it. Lets not get into Yorkie's which will be out later out this month. :X

AMD is getting spanked hardcore right now.

I thought Yorkfields were delayed until Feb or March due to problems with 4-layer motherboards? Excluding the QX9650 that is.

Oh is it only the wolfdales that are coming out then?

My questions if anyone can answer can i cross fire two of the 3870X2's that are coming out next week or is it only Spyder platform that can do that ?

I know the C2Ds are faster than AMDs stuff but to get back to the original topic, I wanted to know if any AMD fanboys have assembled a spider system and what they think of it. I'm currently running an E4400 @ 3Ghz on a 965 mobo with a 7600GT card and I have to admit I'm curious about the day to day usage opinions of regular folks.

Well my rig in sig is pretty close to spider.....just it lacks a K10 😛 and I love it, I have an Intel/Nv rig as well but this is way more fun to OC.

Why would you even consider Phenom at this stage though? Your X2 @ 3.25GHz would beat most overclocked Phenoms hands down. Unless you do a whole heap of encoding of course. 😉

How so? Im curious on why you think that. :]

If your answer is good i may just build a phenom rig for the hell of it.

Only really in single threaded apps, and even then I never said I was considering one just yet.... maybe if the prices drop low enough or even then I might just wait until B3 or 45nm.

Sylvanas, what cooler are you using on the cpu and what are you temps?

I'm using the Zalman CNPS 9700LED with MX-2 and full load orthos @ 1.46v with settings in sig it'll peak at 46c, at 1.41v Vcore 200x16 3.2 it'll peak at around 40-41 tops.

Primarily for the fact that AOD is an all in one utility and has options to a VERY vast array of memory and subtimings, much more than is available with my IP35-E in Memset. Additionally Vdoop with this board/CPU is virtually non existent, whatever value I set in the BIOS, it is rock solid under load confirmed by Speedfan + CPU-Z. Apart from that I just wanted to try something different, overclocking a C2D or C2Q is so easy I could do i blindflded.

I just can not imagine anyone on this forum would go with a spider platform. Every single review ever shows its not worth it. So why would a person who frequents the forums of a review site buy a spider system?

I can only imagine someone who sees the marketing stuff and thinks its cool, and has some vague recollection of hearing from a knowledgeable person that AMD is better. (If I recall the dates correctly, from about 2003 to early-mid 2007 I told everyone I know that there is absolutely no reason to buy an intel system, that an AMD would always be more bang for the buck, more power efficient, etc...)

If it were free or hella cheap id put one together for the hell of it especially if the 3870x2 spanked stuff.

AMD is pissing in the wind with this one. Up until last year I ran amd parts exclusively however c2d won me over to the dark side. There's just no comparison between c2d/c2q and the phenom.

I keep trying to justify getting a Phenom. I mean, AMD could use the cash, as little as it is. But in every case there's a little voice in the back of my skull holding up a bullhorn going "Dude, for the price of going out one night you could just get another Q6600/DS3L!"

Plus on a desktop masquerading as a server (what else do you need quads for? =) I'd be running something Linux-flavored as the host OS, so ATI video hardware is off limits.

Just ordered 4 more sticks of $3/gig HP ram though. That's going to demand *something* to be put into. Maybe if the price drops another $30...

Sylvanas,
How far were you able to go on default voltages? The 5000+ is supposed to get around 3Ghz on default vcore. Thanks.

Enough with the bashing...he's interested in spider he shouldn't be crucified for it. I haven't even been on these forums all that long and it's really gotten worse since I joined. So yes, thank you everyone for saying the same exact thing we hear every time we read anything AMD.

Would some AMD ass licking be more to your flavor? Here, this should make you feel better...

Default Vcore (1.35v) I can go to 3050mhz if I remember correctly. I might try and see whats the absolute limit with 1.5v+ but I don't think its too much above 3.3ghz.

i own the dfi 790fx and phenom 9500 with an nvidia 7950gt and am very happy.. will be happier once i purchase the 3870 or 3870x2

i kinda got pulled into this system by purchasing the phenom as soon as it came out for my asus m2n-e board since i needed the 2 extra cores, and later got the dfi because the geek in me wanted to extract all i could out of the phenom

why do u say this?? there are tons of reviews on the web illustrating the performance-per-clock improvement of the phenom core over athlon... ur comment is very uneducated... just as intel fanboys laugh at anyone buying amd right now, i laugh hysterically at 790fx owners running athlon

You're probably better off posing this question at the Xtremesystems forum. There you'll find qualified and substantiated opinions on the actual platform.
