Pharmacy or IT?

I remember when I graduated HS everyone was telling me I should go into computers. I told them no thanks for a few reasons; i don't like math (i'm really good at it but can't stand it), i didn't see myself enjoying life in the computer field (it works for others, not me), and by the time I graduate college the bubble will burst and I'll have difficulty looking for jobs (I got a lot of stares from people who thought I was crazy for saying that).

The bubble burst some 6 months after I would have graduated (I'm still in college, I didn't know what I wanted to do at the time). So nearly 2 degrees later, MCAT in a little over a month, I'm trying to get into med school and I couldn't be happier. Do what you would be happy doing and not for the money. If you're really serious, you should ask someone in each field if you can shadow them for a couple days. Try to get a feel for what they do and if you would be happy doing it.

Hope you've been studying awhile for the MCAT...it's fun 😛

Go Pharmacy. Buddy of mine went pharmacy while I went Computer Science. Market crashed. I started out of college making 26500 with a BS and MS. He's starting out making 65000 and looks to top 100K within three years. I'm making much more now, but it's been step by step.

pharmacy school is difficult to get into... alot drop before getting into it but if your willing to stride for it... its a nice paying job 🙂

my sister is a pharmacy major... looking at the textbooks its def not something i want to study haha.

pharm D is NOT required to make good money (pretty much all pharmacy skools are pharm D's now, why only 5 years x #expensive credits when they can charge u for 6?)

someone mentioned 60k.....that's low
starting in nyc is 75k hospital (40hr work wee, overtime @1.5pay, 20days vacation/yr, 12 sick days, 4 personal days, 8 holidays etc) and ~93's in the chains
(not worth it, madhouse..."at will"contracts means the corporation owns u)

from my full time job, i'm @86k now and in 2 yrs to hit 100k (union contract + experience raise)
part time job pays 30$ cash /hour

my gf is in verizon IT dept (MS in IT degree) is considering pharmacy skool (she's studyin for her ccna now*boggle*)

in terms of braindead job......only in the non metro/ burbs/boondocks u'll doing 40 scripts a day.........(perhaps lower pay)

Are you kidding? In 5 years IT will be so cool, I'm sure by then Cisco will replace all routers with Giant Robots with machine guns! That'll be the true self defending network. 🙂

Seriously though, it will be alot longer than 5 years before IT goes away because fully automated self defending networks have a long way to go before they become Skynet.

I'd say it's not as difficult for a qualified applicant. Like medical school you get people applying semester after semester without the skills. GPA is hardly enough but many think that's all a school looks at.

Also if you are working retail as a Pharmacist where the big money is, you are really just a glorified pill counter. You will be busy perhaps, but you are merely filling prescriptions and occassionally correcting a doc's mistake (again this is not major brain work, but important)....most chains do not want there pharmacists extending medical/health advice due to legality.

You own your own practice or work research you get to use the knowledge more....but at a way lower pay scale usually.

IT's being flooded. I wouldn't head that way personally if I was at the decision point. (Been in it too long to switch now, plus experience is always in demand.)

I'd go with pharmacy. Being in a saturated market is no fun for a new grad.

alkemyst: Are you at UF Pharmacy? I know someone who's there. (I'm at UF Law)

Just about anything software related can and will be sent overseas, eventually. Them there foreigners are learning to be proficient at English very quickly.

You are missing my point I think. A dude making millions a year is not going to want to make a phone call/vid conference overseas.

If you know your stuff you get the job. Overseas is mostly hacks and clerical duties. Yes a lot of IT/IS has become merely clerical.

But it's the entry-level jobs that will be shipped overseas. It's hard to start out with "senior" in your title right out of school.

My wife may go a different route - consulting. You offer your services to private clinics and managed care facilities. Pay rivals, if not exceeds retail, "hands on" time with patients is about the highest you see, and you have the flexibility of booking your own hours.
