as a little background, i don't know if any of you from san francisco have tried out "five happiness" on geary street.. around 6th right by the kfc across from the kaiser.. anyway, my uncle's dad owns that place, and he used to cook there.. he now owns his own restaurant in san ramon.. called... yah, you guessed it.. yangs... they call their food "modern chinese cuisine" which basically means no weird sh!t like tripe and entrails... he's a fantastic chef, and i would say this even if he wasn't my uncle..

prices are about the same as pf changs.. but man.. they're food is to die for.. my uncle can cook like no other.. if you go, the appetizers i would recommend are the seabass rolls, or the crab puffs.. as an entree, you must try the braised sea bass... it's seriously one of the best things i've ever tasted... go.. check it out.. the website iswww.yangsrestaurant.com

they just opened the place this past weekend.. ribbon cutting with the mayor and everything.. place is business casual like.. i wore a t-shirt and jeans, but then again, i know the owner.. very comfortable.. great place to take a date i think... go try it out, you will not regret it!

I checked out the menu, sounds delicious. I'm in San Diego though, a little too far away for a night out. ;)

you have obviously never eaten authentic chinese food before.

Sure I have. But I like PF Chang's because their food is very tasty, presentation is nice and it's a nice upscale place with good service. It has nothing to do with whether or not it's authentic. I don't give a rat's hairy ass if it's authentic or not.

Mall food is upscale?

If you want authentic Chinese food with an upscale feel like PF Chang's, you're going to need to go the bigger fancier Chinese restaurants. The dinners for about 4-5 people will cost like $100, but it's very nice and you won't find it "nasty" like mom and pop restaurants.

Jules, in the San Diego, I'd recommend Jasmine or Emerald, I believe they're located on Convoy.

Unfortunately some of us are not willing to travel 1000 miles to go to a chinatown. PF Chang's is better than any local place I've been to around here. But not by a lot. Just a bit less greasy and better textures.

If you're in San Francisco you've gotta visit Koi Palace in Daly City for the Dim Sum and meals. Expensive but top rate food.

koi palace is really good... and very expensive.. they're more of a traditional chinese food.. they've got all the good traditional dishes without all the dirt on the utensils... definately go there on saturday or sunday morning for dim sum.. it's packed, but tasty..

then head over to the east bay and go to my uncle's restaurant!!! :D

I'm really chinese but, also part khmer.

I can tell you right now authentic chinese food is an aquired taste. I eat it almost everyday and alot of the times its no better than the fake kind you find in top foods.

LOL, I was going to say the same...every PF Chang's I've seen has been attached to a mall.

I've been there, I like it. I'm not so much of a food snob that I give a crap if it's authentic or not.

And not every PF Changs is attached to a mall, there are two in Vegas not attached to a mall, and another I've seen as well.

to some extent, yes.. but smaller chains usually the locations vary.. a good example is Quizno's here in toronto.. I've been to 3 locations, but would only return to 2.

No they are not attched to a mall but the PF Changs across the street from Terribles casino on Paradise and the PF Changs by Green Valley Ranch casino and the one in the Aladdin sucks to no end. I would take Sam Woo BBQ or Changs anyday over what PF Changs offers in Vegas.

Some chains are certainly worse than others depending on location. But chains are 100% limited in how good they can be. To maintain the franchise they have to serve the same ingredients in about the same proportions as everyone else. A Quiznos location can be terrible, but they can't serve a better sub than the ingredients used allow. The best McDonalds on earth still serves tiny patties of mystery meat on it's Big Macs, you're not going to get huge slabs of ground sirloin no matter what location you visit.

You might have found the world's best Quiznos, but the worlds best Quiznos STILL can't serve as good a sub as a top notch deli. The deli has complete freedom on the quality of ingredients used, Quiznos does not and neither does any other chain.

I just noticed that they are building one here by where I live in Louisville. It's a very nice-looking standalone building. I'm sure I'll at least check it out when it opens. First time I've heard of this place.

hot fish and spicy eggplant with grounded chicken are pretty good... when i go to a place like pf chang's... i take the approach that I'm not there to eat chinese food.

i dont know about you guys

but im ethnic chinese, i consider myself a gastronome, and i think pf chang's is pretty good. no, obviously not as good as the top authentic chinese in town (din ho, marco polo, and ts seafood in Austin), but it is good PER SE. also, the prices are very very good

there are wayyyy worse chinese chains out there... panda xpress anyone?

You food snobs crack me up.

I don't care if it's authentic as long as it tastes good.
