I believe it was Churchill who once said "Britain and America- two great countries seperated by a common language....."

Last time I was in america I know I saw "gas" stations named BP = British Petroleum, like duh... *puts on baseball cap and chews some bubblegum*

Not anymore, they're 76 now.

petrol for Petroleum

gas for gasoline

petroleum is the oil product that various fuels are refined from. kerosene, diesel, gasoline etc.

gasoline is named such because it is the lightest of the fuel products. it floats to the very top, hence "gas"oline.

the comment about americans being stupid was uncalled for.

Oh and BTW, gas makes more sense then petrol.

Hahaha, I thought it was weird when I heard the british I know say it. "We need to get some petrol" "what?" "Petrol, where is the nearest station?" "Uh, gas?" etc

Does it matter? It's not like British English is very original. It's derived from a whole bunch of other different languages and I'm sure there are inconsistencies even within the UK.

Hopefully, you were just joking.

What's the price in the US?
In Australia it's about $1.60/gallon(I've converted all the figures into American).

Really?? damn thats what it costs here I would have figured Aussie prices would be the same as the UK

There'd be a linching if it was. We start getting annoyed at the oil companies if it gets close to US$1.80-90.

Um, BP is HUGE! They don't have many gas stations, except for the 76's, but they are one of the major contributors to the gas you use and I believe are the largest oil drilling company in the North Slope of Alaska. Especially since the bought Arco a while back.

<< I didnt start an I hate american thread. Nor do I hate america. I simply think most people over, say the age of 14 should know what petrol is. >>

Oh and I'm sure you know EVERY American word that is different from the way you say it, too.

Also, regardless of how big it is, I've never seen a BP gas station in my life.
