petrol vs. gas whats the diff?

petrol for Petroleum

gas for gasoline

petroleum is the oil product that various fuels are refined from. kerosene, diesel, gasoline etc.

gasoline is named such because it is the lightest of the fuel products. it floats to the very top, hence "gas"oline.

the comment about americans being stupid was uncalled for.

Oh and BTW, gas makes more sense then petrol.

Does it matter? It's not like British English is very original. It's derived from a whole bunch of other different languages and I'm sure there are inconsistencies even within the UK.

Um, BP is HUGE! They don't have many gas stations, except for the 76's, but they are one of the major contributors to the gas you use and I believe are the largest oil drilling company in the North Slope of Alaska. Especially since the bought Arco a while back.
