Trying looking at the situation another way.

Go back in time when there were virtually no black people in the NBA. Now suppose a well known white basketball player mocked one of the one or two black NBA players in the league by making fun of his accent by saying something dumb in an ebonic accent. Just another way of looking at this.

First, Welcome to Anandtech :)

Second, the only petition we should sign is for Shaq to fix that utterly disgusting free-throw shooting form.

"And as far as Shaq's 'apology' is concerned, well, I don't get it when someone says, 'IF I offended anyone, I'm sorry.' That tactic really worked well for Trent Lott."

"But is this any worse than what the Miami Heat did when Yao Ming came to play in South Florida and the Heat -- as a promotion -- handed out fortune cookies? You can never ignore or rank levels of intolerance of any nature."

"What if Yao Ming had said something about Shaq's ethnicity? You can imagine the outcry and it would be justified. But it has to cut both ways. Where is Jessie Jackson? Where is Al Sharpton? Where is Johnnie Cochran? Yao Ming has far too much class to get involved in this nonsense but you know it has to hurt. With the way he has been mistreated, manhandled and butchered by so many for simply coming here to play basketball -- something he was asked to do -- he must be asking himself, "What is going on here?" There is no place in our world for Shaq's intolerance and insensitivity. And this from a man who has as much experience and knowledge in dealing with the media as anyone alive today. Shaq is a man who has obviously been teased and made fun of a lot in his life because he is visually different from what some consider the "norm." He can't like it when it happens to him -- so why this?" -Bill Walton

I wonder how many people that find that comment funny and think that people should lighten up are actually asian. I find his comments pretty racist...i remember when i was little (like 6 or 7) and it was my parents first came here and i remember people doing the same sh!t. I think back and it pisses the hell outta me. Havent really experienced anything like that in a few years though.

Shaqs comments where stupid. Not Racist. People need to understand that just because someone says something they because like about a race or culture. That does not make it racist

I feel his comments were racist and he should be fúcked over for what he said, but I don't think the petition is going to do much. They should fine him or suspend him.

You honestly don't believe he was delivering a mocking rendition of Chinese speech? "Ah-so" is pretty much the Chinese stereotype analogue of "yes, massah".

but in chinese those words are not spoken with fear but with respect... so you loose...

LOL.. I was gonna say something like that.

Shaq isn't being racist. He just plain doesn't seem to like Yao Ming. That's perfectly fine.

You probby wouldn't be claiming racism if Shaq said, "Tell Yao Ming I hate his guts." You're really reading into his words to be claiming racism on something like that.

And in response, Yao Ming said in Chinese, "Tell Shaq that I'll kick him in his black nuts through his Fubu's."

Step in the shoes of an asian person and be the subject of such comments to your face and see how you feel. The petition is moronic and will accomplish nothing...but there is nothing to lighten up about...mocking the asian language such as the comments made by shaq was RACIST. Of course you wouldn't know anything like that because I'm going to "assume" your

He's in the public eye and will be subject to our scrutiny...I dont give a flying fuk that friggin retard made those comments myself...but what do you expect? He's SHAQ..... if joe blow slikmunks made that comment...i'm sure no one would give a sh!t.
Where the hell do you get off telling people to "Grow up?" He made a racist joke and we're supposed to just take it as a joke and "grow up"? So lets say John Stockton said a racist joke against blacks....ahh well its just a joke, we all make racist jokes right...so lets let it pass. OH HELL NO....you know damn well that would never pass... But then again us asians are usually very quiet and passive so I guess it's ok.....

edit

and no i dont believe shaq's racist...and honestly don't care even if he is...He might not be a racist but he made racist comments...

I'm asian (although not Chinese), and I have no problem with his mock accent. I say the same things to my friends and anyone that has a sense of humor. I b

Dumb move on his part sure, but was he trying to be racist? Nope. Double standard, yup. Do I care? Nope. But as always with this stuff... YMMV.
