In case you don't know, Shaq made some racist comments against the chinese center Yao Ming. Mr. O?Neal made the following comments, ?Tell Yao Ming, ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh? Read one of the articles here.

You probably would have been better off putting it in your sig. You're going to get a lot of "quit your whining" kind of replies.

We, as a society, are foolish to care what any professional athlete thinks.

I guess I should be foolish to care what you think then, too. :p

Shaq is a celebrity and a role model to a LOT of people, especially children. I mean, for crying out loud, he appears on television commercials encouraging kids to read. And now this?

"ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh" is not a racist comment, it's jsut gibberish. He might as well have said "oogly boogley, muffa goo".

I'm Chinese and although comments such as that irk me, I don't really think that a petition needs to be created - nor will one have any effect.

You honestly don't believe he was delivering a mocking rendition of Chinese speech? "Ah-so" is pretty much the Chinese stereotype analogue of "yes, massah".

Shaq has already issued an apology, but I believe David Stern needs to get rid of all the racial taunting across the board not to just one particular race.

What a terrible analogy. The negative stigma of "yes, massah" comes from the fact that the original speaker was a slave.

A more accurate analogy would be if someone said "How" when talking about Native Americans or "wassa matta you" talking about Italian Americans. I really don't see what the big deal is. It was rude and stupid, but to construe it as racism is idiotic.

Why is mocking the way a player talks any different from mocking his physique, appearance, dress style, hometown, family, or actual basketball skills? Shaq has certainly mocked Yao's game before (saying he would dunk all over Yao)... so why is it a huge issue now that he has mocked the way Yao talks?

The petition will do nothing.

I don't believe this was racist, but most asians I know think this was racist. Tale of two tales, Borderline racism by Trent Lott, outrage by the black community, all over the news (a lot of attention) and he eventually resigns. Borderline racism by Shaq, outrage by some in the asian community, in the back page of the news in the sports section (hardly no attention) and nothing will change.

What is the petition supposed to achieve? I believe he has already apologized for his remarks - it's not as though the petition can somehow undo what he already said. This is just a pointless band-aid to placate hurt feelings.

1. Someone who plays basketball = Speaker of the House I see.

2. Trent Lott story was fueled by media and Trent Lott's idiotic apologies, not black people. He asked to be on BET, they simply said yes.

3. Front page=politics, Back page=sports. When was this any different?
