Kind of confusing. Do you mean persistent single player? Or an MMO/FPS/RTS, just not RPG?

Online multiplayer, but not like a traditional MMORPG gameplay and mechanics. And no, not EVE.

It can be fantasy or sci-fi, etc but just not the standard mmorpg game play.

World War 2 online would fit that. Well, it's semipersistent, eventually one side wins and the map resets.

Not if you are talking about WW2 online. MMOs that aren't RPGs are often weak in their persistent content.

Heck, Bad Company 2 might be closer if you are concerned about getting better stuff in a non-rpg, but in that game's case it is your character that's persistent, not the world.

There were persistent world servers that ran custom maps and mods for Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2. I don't know if they're still running or still populated. Here are links to three of them:

http://www.amiaworld.net/
http://highergroundpoa.proboards.com
http://www.arelith.com/

I reinstalled neverwinter nights 1 about a week ago and can confirm that Amia is still full with a constant 50+ players.

Just re-installed nwn2 yesterday. Have yet to log on to anything online but after glancing through the server list there are several with 60+ players.

Oh god... I wanted to love that game and the concept, but damn was it boring.

Everything about the game felt so dated and archaic. Admittedly, they overhauled the game a bit since I quit playing, but there's no way I'd go back.

Yep. They need to mix WW2OL's big campaign map with Battlefield 2 style gameplay.

I'm trying out Uncharted Waters right now. It's one of those free-to-play probably korean games... but honestly I'm enjoying it so far. It's a little slow, in the same way EVE used to be... I dunno, try it, might or might not be what you're looking for.

Visuals aren't embarrassing. Poor shadows, but they claim it can run on a P3. Music is excellent, sound effects aren't bad.

NWN has some good options. Higher Grounds' numbers are slowly dwindling but it's a great PvM experience. You can solo level, but will want to group through the "dungeons" and "raids" certainly (they're not exactly that, but you get the idea). If you get far enough along you can learn to solo (farm) the "dungeons" but that likely isn't a big deal.

Anyway, great endgame PvM, but it still kind of boils down to "get the gear to kill the mob to get the gear to kill the mob..." but it's a very fun ride. I still log in now and again to go on a run or something.

Would Diablo 2 fall within this category? It's not really massively multiplayer and not really a traditional rpg either.

Nor is it a persistent world

The multiplayer servers are in a way, as long as they don't close and re-open. If you clear out an area it stays clear until the server shuts down and/or the final person leaves.

Thats what I was thinking, as long as one person stays its always gonna be there.

Does NWN2 still have a large community? God, I haven't played that in forever, and I sadly never got interested enough to get very far...

legos online?
online web games like might and magic heroes online.

it's probably only going to be sandbox games that are going to be persistant worlds. Or a mmofps.

are there any building or rts style games out there with a persistent world?

so how about games with a persistent character?
I guess most SP games are persistent anyway.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a way to describe what I'm looking for. It probably doesn't exist though.

I don't know how well that would work... The computer would continue to build while you weren't playing. If you don't play for like a month, you'll open up the game and get your ass handed to you instantly, or just find your civilization in a pile of ruins.
