Since I've been a member of this forum I've seen people use the word "Period" to describe a full stop, never heard that before... I've only ever used Period either to describe menstruation or a small amount of time.

Poll en route.

I've never heard of a "full stop" being used to describe any form of punctuation.

Period, comma, colon, semicolon, exclamation mark, question mark, etc. etc.

I have only heard UK folks use "full stop", but I always understood what was meant, even in different contexts.

Had to google full stop to figure out wtf you were talking about.

It shows up in history books, particularly with regards to telegraphs, morse code, and joint operations between US and UK forces in WWII.

But I just kind of assumed it was as outdated in the UK as the telegraph is.

I don't believe that you've never heard the term "period". Both the terms are extremely common here, and both are completely acceptable. I'm pretty sure you're just trolling here.

OP always acts so surprised at common american english, yet he has over 20000 posts on an american forum.

troll thread is for trolls, Full stop.

...yeah, just doesn't sound like anyone would ever use this phrase that you created from your ass.
