I've never heard of a "full stop" being used to describe any form of punctuation.

Period, comma, colon, semicolon, exclamation mark, question mark, etc. etc.

You only need one "etc.", bro. The second one is redundant and, actually, grammatically incorrect.

:colbert:

Heard of both, only use Period. But I'd expect most people in the UK would have heard of this use of "period" as well.

troll thread is for trolls, Full stop.

...yeah, just doesn't sound like anyone would ever use this phrase that you created from your ass.

What phrase I "created from my ass"...?

I don't believe that you've never heard the term "period". Both the terms are extremely common here, and both are completely acceptable. I'm pretty sure you're just trolling here.

I've heard it to mean "the end" or "no arguments"

I.e. "WHEN YOU LIVE UNDER MY HOUSE, YOU LIVE UNDER MY RULES. PERIOD" Never considered that it meant full stop.

we should make a list of things HAL doesn't understand or have never heard of... on second thought we already have one of those...

it's called wikipedia.

Friend was born, raised, educated in London, came here 5 years ago.

Says you're either retarded or an idiot. Its taught both ways.

Hes right on both accounts.

I'm neither. He's been corrupted for the last 5 years.

Given that theres a selection of Americans in this thread who've never heard "Full stop" it's not beyond belief that I haven't head "period" in this context is it?

It's looking like you're both...he was taught that there so...and "full stop" sounds excessively wordy for a little dot, period.

So you know one English person who was taught "period" therefore every English person on the planet was either taught it or they are retarded idiots?

You said it😛

And I just polled 3 other English in my office that happen to be near me and all of them were taught it as well, did you actually attend school?

And it's astonishing the things he doesn't even know about his beloved English people.

well, not that astonishing.

We certainly were, we were taught about commas, full stops... everything.
So if it's a full stop why would the writing continue after it in any way? Seems more like a partial stop to me...unlike a period, end of sentence😀

Wow, I am shocked and amazed that HAL would post another "lolz I don't get this about the US" thread. This is so out of the ordinary.
