I'll never understand Anandtech. Looters should be shot on sight, according to people who no doubt pirate music or TV shows.

Absolute. Total. Ownage.

Here's an idea: the city MUST evacuate. However, it's going to take time to round up people and find trasportation to get them out of New Orleans. People are going to be lined up.

If you find evidence of looting on a person, he/she goes to the end of the line. If time runs out before the people can be evacuated (for any reason) then those people at the end face the results of nature. If not, those at the end suffer the most discomfort for waiting the longest.

As for the shop owners: probably all merchandise is already considered destroyed for insurance reasons. This doesn't mean the looting it 'right'. It means the shop owners have no reason to stick behind to 'protect' anything since it's already considered a loss... looted or not.

While I don't think stealing is a good thing, I can't help but wonder what the sale value of mud caked, water logged merchandise is ? Without electrical power most food stuffs will go bad in a heartbeat, most clothing will be mold in a matter of days and who really wants water logged tv's/computers etc ?

The city of New Orleans has far bigger worries than looters in the days ahead, it's such a shame,it's a lovely area steeped in history.

This looting sh!t makes me sick.

I have friends who work for the utilities here that are taking time off to go to New Orleans and help restore power and water. People all over the US right now giving money and some are volunteering time to help the situation.

I can't understand how a person could steal what few possessions another person has left.

If people need food or water I'm sure its available to them

These looters should be caught and serve a minimum of 5 years in jail.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.
"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

Ah, the cult of victimization. I've suffered so much I don't have to take responsibility for anything in my life.

DIAF.

what should they do? let the food rot while people go hungry?
You missed the point. These white people "found" food...while black people "loot".

No, I think what people are saying is that most people aren't going to condemn someone looting food, water, and other needs. However, the images of mostly black people you see on the videos are not taking 'needs'; they are taking 'wants'.

Look you idiots like I've said before shooting people is not going to help anything right now. Thats pure logic, they've got enough toxic waste and bodies floating around in that place for the next 4 months. It has nothing to do with me 'being a commie' or whatever.

Law enforcement should keep the footage and press charges against anyone identified looting. I believe they've done that before.

Looting is quite illegal in most states. After dealing with the high priorities of search and rescue and drainage, the police will indeed use this footage to i.d. the dirtbags stealing high money items. Killing looters isn't going to save the lives of stranded civilians.

Hate to say it out loud, but you notice most of the looters are not white.

Check the demgraphics of NO and you will find your answer.

No offense, but that simply is not the point and it is exactly that attitide that illustrates how values and principles are becoming extinct virtues.

Please feel free to explain how it isn't the point and how your "values and principles" apply to an area that will be a 10000% disaster area once the flooding has subsided and all those oh so precious material goods would be as valuable as a bag of moldy dog food.

Wouldn't the insurance replace everything anyways? I say they mind as well take the items before it get's screwed up. Looting during a riot and looting during this seem completely different, a riot I believe there is NO EXCUSE but in this situation I can see it being justifyable. I'd only loot from places that 1. The items are clearly going to get damaged and 2. I know they have insureance (If I see a perfectly presevered mom and pop shop, then I wouldn't do it).
