Well, the PS4 will eventually offer up their PS Now stuff. I still think that Microsoft should and will leverage their servers to do something similar. But this $400-500 purchase isn't just for what's out now, of course. The problem is, the OP is saying he wants to spend $400-500 on a console to do the media stuff his HTPC already handles, but he wants to add on the infrequent gaming, which could also be handled by his HTPC (especially if he gave it a bit of a GPU boost).

The OP just isn't the target consumer for these console. It's takes quite a few games to justify a console purchase, IMO.

neither have any games out worthy of $400-500 purchase, unless you're a fanboy or like new technology.
That, of course, is completely subjective. My family (me, wife, two teenage boys) have gotten so many hours of play out of Forza 5, Killer Instinct, Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Battlefield 4, Peggle 2, Tomb Raider, Madden, etc. that my purchase of the Xbox One is easily justified.

I'm sure some will say that you could play a few of those games on the 360, but it's not the same experience. And I'm sure some will say those games don't interest them personally... Which would bring me back to whether or not a new console is a good purchase is "completely subjective".

I said it before and I'll say it again... If you are deciding on a new console (or between either one), look at the current and upcoming games, and use that as your deciding factor. It's all about the games.

Why do you guys keep telling me to get an htpc? I have one. Even stated that in the OP. z77 itx, 3770k, 8 gb, 120 gb ssd, and a Titan running win 8.1.

I'm just looking to play around with a console.

J/k on the Titan and 3770k.... I was just trying to act ignorant and wasteful. Though I did at one point. Since replaced with a Celeron Ivy and integrated video

Lol got me. Wasn't even mad just was like "Lol.... when will it be my turn for GTX Titan HTPC".

No one can recommend you a console. It all depends on what games you want to play. And if you play online, what your friends have. I personally am holding off on a console purchase because none of my friends really have a console and I just don't care. I'm really happy with my gaming PC and don't see a need to adopt this early. If I was you, I'd wait til Christmas or something when more games are out. Right now, there are so many PC Games that are out and SO many of these console games are coming out on PC. So very few exclusives. Might as well wait for the price drop on the new consoles and wait for the versions that are less failure prone.

There is no objective way to answer that. It's 100% dependent on your personal preference for the exclusives, really. For me, it's the One. Other than The Show, Sony doesn't really offer anything that I care about. My friends are Xbox users (mostly because of me), and I prefer Halo to Killzone, Forza to Gran Turismo, and the rest is mostly third-party for me.

If you're a spec junkie, Sony will win out. If you have no interest in online play (Microsoft keeps streaming apps like Netflix behind a paywall, along with most other apps), Sony will win out. If you like the general third-person action stuff (Uncharted-style games), Sony will win out.

If you like the FPS genre, Microsoft will probably win out because Halo and Titanfall both seem superior to Killzone (which I thought looked awesome but ended up getting average reviews). If you like th more-robust OS (through multi-tasking and the pass-through abilities, for instance), Microsoft would be the route to go. If you plan to play games online, it's about a wash on the subscription front, though Sony's PS+ offers free games on the PS4 each month (only the 360 gets it from Games with Gold).

Again, it's all about what you want. Think about what the main features are for you in a system, then figure out which console fills those needs better. Ask us if you know what you want from each console, and we can probably give you a better response from there.

I've had a great time playing the "free" PS+ games. I haven't even purchased a PS4 game yet haha. Even though I do have a PS+ sub, I can not get past MS charging for access to netflix. Screw that. I refuse to support them on principle.

FWIW, Titanfall is PC as well, so since you have a gaming PC its not really a Xbox One exclusive. The game looks much better on PC anyway.

i have both and my ps4 controller has been broken for at least close to 2 months and i haven't bothered getting it replaced yet.

that said, if killer instinct wasn't on xbox1, i probably wouldn't play that at all either. but with titanfall around the corner and killer instinct, it gets a lot more of my gaming time.

both consoles are pretty weak right now if you aren't into any of the exclusives on either console. most of the other games are just ports of 360/ps3 games, with a few exceptions, but those games aren't system sellers.

as others have said, look at the lineup and decide what has more games you like coming out for it, and go that route.

i posted that on 2/20 and i still haven't turned on my ps4 since and don't see turning it on any time soon. i do have a working ps4 controller though!

PS4 or Xbox One? Which is better?

I'm sorry but this guy isn't looking for "a PC is better" as his answer. It doesn't matter if it is or not, the question is comparing the two consoles. FWIW, the PS4 is better IMO, on the grounds of comparison between the two.

First of all, most of the games that are out right now are cross-platform, and the PS4 version is superior in a direct comparison for almost every one. Sure the Xbone has some great exclusives, like Dead Rising 3 and Titanfall, but once you get past those, there isn't much else to look forward to on the Xbone front for the rest of 2014 other than cross-platform.

PS4 also gets you free content each month with PS+, where as Xbox Live will get you nothing on the Xbone. It doesn't matter if the PS+ titles are mostly just indie titles and not AAA right now, the fact is it's something for free and a reason to turn on your console. There's also Warframe and the upcoming FF14 launch for PS4, so if you're into MMOs there's a huge plus. Xbone has nothing to offer on this front as of yet.

There's also little things like watching people act like idiots on PS Live, I usually end up flipping through it at some point each day just in case someone decides to do something M-rated. :)

Again, it DOES NOT MATTER if you can get some of this stuff on the PC, the scope of the question is console vs console, if you're going to buy one or the other which one is perceived as better? At the moment, I would say PS4, but that could change at some point.

As others have stated, take a look at the current exclusives and decide if you'd rather play Titanfall or Infamous Second Son, and decide where you stand on the cross-platform comparison. Also decide whether or not you would enjoy Kinect and its features, and whether you would care about watching TV through the Xbone. The Xbone may be for you based on content, but if we're talking about a straight up comparison of the two consoles, I would say go with PS4. That would also be what you'll most likely hear elsewhere on the internet, and I don't see that changing in 2014 at least.

Nearly the same thing for me. I haven't had the desire to turn my PS4 on since I got bored of AC4. Which was a push for me to get in the first place since I had typically played those on the 360.

Where as I have played 6+ games and use my Xbone for about everything.

Yeah, it's slow goin and will be for the near future. I got mine and enjoyed Infamous, but there's not much else I feel like playing at current prices. I could rent Knack and barrel through that but that's about it. When Watch Dogs is released I see myself picking it up on PC, but part of me wants to get it on ps4 just so I have more to play on it.

Look at the exclusive titles for each, both released and upcoming, and decide which interest you more.

It's about the games. Period.

That a bit short sighted. Are you going to make a decision based on 2-3 titles this year?

Looking that their known strengths:

XB1: Kinect, TV integration.

PS4: Better specs, better 1st party support, $100 cheaper, better indie support, PS+ is a better value.

If you are really a Halo/Fable/Gears/Forza guy you will get plenty of that and should buy a XB1. Sony is less predictable with their IPs. Some get predictable releases, but sometimes they let their devs develop new IPs out of the blue. PS3 got Last of Us last year. You will see a Gran Turismo, but you will also see Drive Club. They released another Infamous, but The Order is also coming.

The way I see it, the PS4 is the 2008 360 while the XB1 is the 2010 Kinect era 360. One is games centric, the other is a jack of all trades - design by committee IMO.

The only time my xb1 has been used the past two or three weeks is watching TV heh.

This is in contrast to my ps4 being used for Netflix, playing the crap out of infamous, dead nation, and I have even went back to revisit resogun.

I'm also debating what platform to get it on. Ps4 I have a friend that will get the game too so that's nice. Pc will look great but this is the type of game you enjoy by taking your time it seems and I feel more comfy playing it on my tv while relaxing rather than sitting over a keyboard.

I still say you should bring your PC out to your TV and try it.

For the last gen I'd say the PS3 was a better console due to exclusives like Uncharted being better than Halo.

But the PS3 lost in cross platforms compared to the 360.

Since the PS4 is more powerful this time around, I'd get a PS4. Better exclusives on the way, more powerful cross platform games.

Also, xbox exclusives like titanfall are still available on the PC.

Then I'll need a mini table and wireless mouse and keyboard. I'll think about it, still have time to do so. We are suppose to be getting pc footage soon just don't know when yet.

If you are debating what console to get, go based off of the games you like.

In spite what Sony/MS say about the actual or upcoming multimedia capabilities of their respective consoles, neither is ready for full on HTPC use. DLNA is still missing. Supposedly it is coming for the PS4 in an upcoming update. For the XB1, DLNA is there but it only works via push DLNA from Windows 8 so you can forget using it with a regular DLNA server which to me is as bad as not having it at all. My samsung tv actually has much better multimedia support built into it than either console has....that's sad. My TV has full DLNA support and is capable of reading NTFS external hard drives. Good games or not both Sony and MS screwed up bad from that standpoint as far as I'm concerned.

The only reason to buy either console right now is if you want whatever first party games are actually in stores. For primary HTPC use, neither console can do the job adequately, with XB1 having the slight edge for having at least a form of DLNA, even if it's completely useless to those of us with real DLNA servers. Neither support external drives, so local playback is out of the question.

In short, only buy either console if there is a game that you want to play now. Otherwise, wait until the features you want get patched in. Without time tables, it would suck to spend $400 on a console today just to have to wait 6 months to actually use it the way you invision.

yeah, i mean i'm literally only playing killer instinct on xbox1, and i play it probably 2 times a week for a few hours at a time. i told titanfall after as week. and with fulgore and lobbies coming out next week i can see me sticking to that for a while. i'm readly to see what is in store at e3. i hope we see some sort of arcade racer that isn't need for speed at e3. i would LOVE a new burnout game on the new consoles.

now that i have my 360 hooked back up for hbo go i might get around to playing south park too.

Just as you won't get LIVE because of principle, I won't get Origin because of principle. I don't want multiple pieces of DRM to manage my game library. I have no desire to create another online alias to play a single game.

Plus, my TV is 720p. I can live with lesser graphics.

This assumes that all people have the same use case, though. Like myself, I have no interest in the One's TV integration. I don't even have cable in my room because I watch one TV show and live sports, so I go in the living room on the rare instances I want to watch TV (like the Cubs game that's on now). The Kinect isn't a big deal to me either, though I'll likely grab Kinect Sports Rivals if I get a One.

Also, the PS4 is TECHNICALLY $100 cheaper, but Best Buy and the Microsoft Store sell Titanfall and Forza 5 bundles for $450 each. Getting a game on the PS4 would be $460, so if you like either of those titles, it's technically a better deal to go Microsoft on the initial purchase.

I wouldn't say anything said before was short-sighted though. Yeah, we're only talking about 2014 games, but it's impossible to do anything more. You can obviously look into the future on Gran Turismo (unless Driveclub kills it off) and Uncharted for the PS4, but what else can you be sure of, from a first-party sense? I guess The Show, but my love of baseball won't change its mediocre sales numbers. The Xbox can bank on Halo, Gears, and Forza, but I think it's hard to find the long-term viability of Fable given the gaps it's had in release so far.

The only stuff that can REALLY be relied on is third-party titles. We know we'll get Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed and EA Sports titles every year, but the rest of it is probably going to be surprise remakes (still hoping for Halo 2 to get an HD remake) and new IP we haven't heard of yet.

If I didn't have a beast pc I would probably have gotten the titanfall bundle. It's a good price and I'm glad MS did lower the price. But having played up to level 49 in titanfall I could see how it gets somewhat repetitive.
But with friends I'm sure it's better. What sucks for both consoles is the lack of good games to get one now.

Ps4 has infamous which is great and definitely worthy of next gen. Soon wstchdogs will be out too but that's for all the other systems as well.

I agree, but consoles are also an investment of sorts. You can wait a year or two, but I find myself behind on finishing games a lot, so I'd be fine getting just one or two games now, one or two more in 2014, then going from there. If I waited until Christmas (still a possibility), I'd have probably 4 or 5 games I wanted to play, plus a couple more out early in 2015, and I'd likely never catch up.

I have a solid PC (4670K and 32 GB of RAM, though I've yet to get a SSD), and my dad's going to give me a 290X towards the end of the year (bought a pair for LTC mining, and said I could have the second when it's no longer profitable/worth it to do because of difficulty), but I don't love competitive PC gaming. I use my desktop on a bed, so most of what I play is with a controller. Playing something like Titanfall on a bed or with a controller on PC would be a nightmare.

I would never trade my Gtx 780ti for even both combined.Consoles will never be better than pc
The 780ti is an awesome card. How does Madden, Infamous, Dead Rising, and Forza run on it? I wonder how Destiny, Halo, and Metal Gear Solid will run on it.

Oh wait...

Like I said, it's all about the games.

Actually people have used the Ds4 on titanfall on pc and it wasn't bad at all. You do have to use this mapper but it works well. I'm used to the mouse and keyboard.
