toying with the idea of trading 1 of my 780 ti's for a console (+cash). Which one do you feel is the better way to go. Likely the console will be the main device for my living room TV. Currently I'm using a media pc on windows 8 and am thinking I want to try the console route. It will see lots of hours streaming video on netflix and aereo and occasionally play a game or 2.

Look at the exclusive titles for each, both released and upcoming, and decide which interest you more.

It's about the games. Period.

Yeah what he said. I like both but like the One better but the ps4 is more powerful, both will have most of the same games. You can't go wrong with either. I also smh at people obsessing over the specs and resolution, get a pc if that is your biggest concern, not one of these midrange gaming pcs in a console box.

It's 100% about the exclusives. If you like the first-person shooters like Halo and Titanfall, go the Xbox route. If you like the more action/adventure stuff like Uncharted and Infamous, Sony's probably the right answer.

That said, you also have to ask if you want an online subscription or not. Pretty much everything Microsoft offers for media is behind the Xbox LIVE Gold paywall, while Sony will let you use Netflix and Hulu Plus and that without a PSN+ subscription. Microsoft offers more media stuff, plus the multitasking, but it is all dependent on your exclusive preferences and whether you want to go online and/or pay extra for that media access.

If netflix is a concern, on my end I get the awful video judder/audio desync on the Xbone. I retired my PS3 from dedicated Netflix box and promoted the PS4.

I haven't gone back to test with the recent update, but just putting it out there. I couldn't watch Netflix on the Xbone, and none of the solutions suggested on the internet or through Xbox support resolved it.

EDIT: And what Lil Frier said too, since you probably don't have an XBL account, it is required for Netflix.

I have had both, and if it is purely a gaming machine, then I agree it is singularly about the exclusives. I handed the PS4 down to my brother because I really enjoy the passthrough functionality on the Xbox One and it fits my use case well. I have heard of some people's issues with media functionality on both boxes (Netflix syncing, the Passthrough causing audio issues, etc.) but was fortunate enough to not have any with either piece of hardware.

It helps the majority of my friends are on the One and I am a Forza fan :)

The xbox live requirement would be a deal buster, so ps4 it would have to be.

Good point.

Keep in mind that you'll need a PS+ subscription to play games online.

But if you are really only using it as a media device... Your HTPC is going to be superior in pretty much every way. The only reason to get a console is to play games.

Can't play PS4 games online without a subscription either so realistically you're gonna have a subscription regardless of console choice. Get an Xbox One if you like shooters and racing games, get a PS4 if you like JRPGs.

Edit: beaten to it

Whichever you get, don't pay retail for the subscription. Both can be had for around $40 at anytime

Like others have said, if you plan on playing online at all, then the whole netflix being behind a paywall thing doesn't matter, as you will have to pay for the online service on either console. What kind of games interest you?

Am I the only one who noticed in his post "and occasionally play a game or 2"? Something tells me online console play isn't in the cards.

I assumed he just wanted a streamer for the living room, with his focus on "It will see lots of hours streaming video on netflix."

Frankly, either console for just Netflixing seems like a waste.

Roku, Apple TV etc would be much cheaper but if it is straight media the htpc is better

No interest in online gaming with it. The reason for the console interest is for the few titles that are exclusives, like uncharted/halo. I don't know... I'm just bored with my toy's and since it's still cold fak around here my Porsche 911 is still sitting dormant. FAK New England!

I hear you, I'm in upper MA (Lowell area).

Frankly, owning both I'm already bored of them. March things should pick up, but with Titanfall having a PC version the Xbone line up feels flat for me.

I'm mostly going through my backlog of PS2/PS3/Handheld/PC games. I got $1,000 worth of paper weights haha.

Early adopter tears.

Fixed

I have a PS4 but lets be realistic we are probably one to two years out from any real JRPGs hitting the system.

Alternative:

Use Bing Rewards. You sign up for it with your Microsoft account, use Bing to search, and you'll get enough points each month to get a month of Xbox LIVE. After using it for a bit, you get into the "Gold" tier rather quickly. You earn 30 points each day through searching (and you can just search a bunch of random crap in about 5 minutes for your daily points), meaning you can get about 900 points each month. A month of Gold is 679 points when you're in the Bing Rewards "Gold" tier, so you'll have about 200 points left over.

Basically, using Bing Rewards will get you Xbox LIVE Gold for free, and it takes 5-10 minutes per day.

If you're looking for a toy, get the One. Trust me.

i have both and my ps4 controller has been broken for at least close to 2 months and i haven't bothered getting it replaced yet.

that said, if killer instinct wasn't on xbox1, i probably wouldn't play that at all either. but with titanfall around the corner and killer instinct, it gets a lot more of my gaming time.

both consoles are pretty weak right now if you aren't into any of the exclusives on either console. most of the other games are just ports of 360/ps3 games, with a few exceptions, but those games aren't system sellers.

as others have said, look at the lineup and decide what has more games you like coming out for it, and go that route.

Is $3.33 per month, worth 5-10 mins a day?

5-10 mins per day equals 3.75 hours per month. So, you're basically putting in almost four hours of effort for a $3.33 reward?

Granted, it's not really "effort", but still...
