;) I am going to have to go with the BIG G here and say someone is going to H3LL... ;) j/k j/k Don't crucify me ;)

Some people take themselves too seriously. I am a Christian, but I would have to say if Jesus hung out with tax collectors and prostitutes, I am sure they joked about a lot of offensive things. Who is to say Jesus didn't laugh with them.

Anyways, your friend is being quite hypocritical about what she believes if she is railing into people about their problems. Especially if they aren't Christians themselves.

People say motherfvcker all the time. How is "God" you're God only?

It depends on the context and whether or not they agree. For example, in this instance, it must clearly be the christian god, but when it's in the Pledge of Allegiance, it can mean any god (apparently).

You're friend is a meanie face and needs to learn to respect other people's opinions. There's too many christaians out there who don't seem to understand lecturing people and telling them they're going to hell if they don't change is NOT the best way to bring people to god. I mean who wants to consider becoming religious when people keep telling them they aren't good enough.

Maybe I didn't get the memo, but I believe MF is a general term, not addressing anyone's mother specifically. God is one, specific person. You would have to have knowledge of the Bible to know what "My God" means and I'm not going to bother explaining it to you because I'm sure you could care less, which is your God-given right. :)

The tenets of Christianity are for Christians to follow - and only for Christians. Your friend can feel free to admonish someone in his church for saying God Damn - otherwise your friend should STFU. Religious doctrine should only be applicable to the followers of the religion - and forcing someone else to follow your religious doctrine is the very definition of religious oppression.

Exactly. I don't particularly like it, but I wouldn't yell at someone for using Gods' name in vain. Someone who isn't Christian probably doesn't think of it as anything but a saying. They don't realize they may be offending anyone. Just say " I'd prefer it if you would try not to say that around me, I'm Christian and it makes me uncomfortable" or something.

I would not like if someone said it. There are other, more offensive phrases, of course.

3rd. Commandment, Exodus 20:7 ?Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain?. Old Testament punishment - Leviticus 24:16 ?And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death?, New Testament punishment - Matthew 12:32 ?Whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come?. Mark 3:29 - ?He that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgivness, but is in danger of eternal damnation?.
So if anyone says goddamnit even once, they're damned to hell for eternity with no hope for forgiveness? And people actually read that thing and believe what it says. You can't POSSIBLY convince me that any god that created this world would really care THAT much about you using his name for a swear word.

Ilmater, you just displayed more wisdom than any pope, theologian, priest, imam or religious person in all of history.

yea it's pretty retarded

if he wants to believe some religion that forbids him from saying it, that's fine... he shouldn't go around attacking people for violating the tenet of a religion that they may not even believe in though

No, he didn't. Read the bible very carefully, there's only one unforgivable sin - russianpower has said what it is. It's not taking God's name in vain.

I wonder if phrases like 'for Pete's sake' irritate him even though it's in reference to St. Peter and not to God specifically. Or is it just unacceptable when words like damn are intermingled, and things like 'for god's sake' would be okay.

hmm .... you should say "sail hatan" to see if that gets a rise out of him.
Yea, I'd be this guys enemy real quick. Though I don't usually say anything with the word "god" in it since I do not believe in a god. To me "god damn" is completely meaningless.

I absolutely hate to hear or even read that phrase. It makes me cringe whenever I do. I don't "go off" on anyone when I hear it in public, I just walk away, but I have every right to be offended by it and to find those who use it in public places to be rude and disgustingly insensitive people.

It's common knowledge that that phrase is one of the most offensive things that you can say around a large segment of the population, so shouldn't common decency toward others be expected in public?

I can't believe that there are people in this thread telling others what they can and cannot be offended by. They defend their right to view the phrase how they wish while in the same breath denying others their right to view it as they see it. Could this hypocrisy stem from the knowledge that they are not likely to be verbally attacked or beaten senseless by a group of Christians when they use the phrase around them? Something tells me that these same people would not be throwing the "N word" around in a room full of young black men. Why is that? Would you tell them they have no right to be offended by it?

The commandment and it's punishments sound more like a way to keep people from exploring new ideas instead of adhering strictly to the religious beliefs set before them by their governing powers.

There is no such thing as a dirty word or phrase of color.

It's only in your mind how you were brought up...

Sticks and Stones will break your Bones...

But names will never hurt me!

Please explain how a command not to use Gods' name in vain prevents anyone from exploring an idea or having a thought. Do you need to be profane to think? I don't understand your point.
