People who are into guns kinda weird me out

How would you even know that about a person? It's not exactly something that comes up in conversation...oh, I don't know, ever? :colbert:

People who think the police can protect them are usually the ones who are weirded out by people who own guns or are "anti gun".

A home invader can kill you in seconds. It will take at least 5 minutes in the best of conditions to call the police and have them arrive at your house.

Wow..so the threshold is about 3 you say? Better hope yours isn't number 1 through 3 then...and it takes no imagination to remember Katrina, especially for those who lived through it, and I'm sure a ton of people who stayed really didn't think it would get that bad, but it sure as hell did.

In the absence of a real concrete threat, there is only your paranoid imagination.

I don't feel threatened by inanimate objects, that is paranoia...if you wait for a "concrete" threat (I would assume this to be someone breaking down your door and killing you) it's way too late...kind of like buying a fire extinguisher after your house has caught fire

Well I was robbed at gunpoint once and the cops did a REALLY GOOD JOB catching them after I was robbed.

For the duration though I was powerless. Not a good feeling, FYI. Its not that people think the cops will protect them its just that they haven't a clue how being mortal works.

I've known gun enthusiasts that are crazy paranoid psycho people, and I've known gun enthusiasts that are completely normal, coherent people.

Yet I have never met a cat owner that isn't a bit weird at the least.

:hmm:

1942 Mosin Nagant, made at the Izhevsk arsenal.

Your shoulder gets used to it after a few hundred rounds ^_^

If you lean into it then it don't hurt

Now this a shotgun

BUt it takes quite a bit of imagination to imagine a large-scale collapse in order. And even if it did happen, there would likely be ample preparation time.

Zip it hippie. The cold fingers of zombie death would be around your throat before you could find the first available Boy Scout Trainer.

Those undead bastards show up at MY door? I'm layin' them low.

Srsly, your don't understand the art and science of ballistics or the pride taken in proficient marksmanship. Therein lies the appeal of firearms. It used to be universally understood among this country's men.

In the days of shooting coyotes before they ate your flock, sure.

I actually did seriously consider buying a gun when I lived in an urban area. It's weird how some crimes really aren't reported in urban settings, due to political correctness I think.

Um, I own guns but, unlike most gun owners, I typically spend very little time worrying about home invaders.

So how many cats do you have? 😛

Any hobby is weird when viewed from an outside perspective. I had friends who thought I was weird for spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on pool cues, or buying pool balls when I didn't even have a table. I have friends who are into steel tip darts and bring their own set with them to bars, which I don't understand in the slightest. As long as you aren't hurting anyone, go hog wild.

I think there's definitely a disconnect between growing up with guns and one's comfort level. Before I turned 25, I saw exactly two real guns (outside of strapped to the side of a police officer or some other such situation); one mounted in my uncle's house and a handgun in a case at my Godmother's. They made me nervous. When my best friend got out of the military, he started procuring some guns and showing me how they worked, and my discomfort around them vanished. I'm not worried that someone who collects guns is going to unleash a hail of bullets at me, since that's just delusional paranoia. I think that there are plenty of people who don't grow up around guns, or only around violent uses of gun (primarily in urban environments) who grow to associate guns with crime or violence, and that's no more fair than saying all pool players are degenerate gamblers. As long as people are responsible, it's a perfectly valid hobby.

I agree. But it's not really unique compared to other mechanical works of art, like computers, watches, bicycles, which are equally if not more intricate and beautiful.

A gun fetish I think points to a paranoid state of mind.

wtf are you talking about?

tell me there is nothing beautiful and unique about these guns...

I don't even get the computer reference.

yeah. The title says, "people who are into guns", no? Lots of people use computers but a minority are really into them.

in that case, the people who are into guns should bother you less as they are more likely the ones that go out and practice shooting and take classes and take gun safety seriously.

The people you should be worried about are the ones who use guns but aren't really into them. you know, the ones who buy a gun and never learn to actually learn how to use it properly.

the people that know how to fix a computer are the ones who are into them and are the people you call when you fuck it up by installing spyware and viruses and forget your password every day.

OP is just jelly that he's not prepared for the zombie apocalypse like schneiderguy. Just ask anyone here OP, all of my screws are perfectly tightened.

weak collection! 😛

you need like 10 more.

haha, j/k, at least your not one of those pansy ass cry-babies afraid of a mechanical object.

Basically, a gun fetish is operationally like any gadget fetish, such as computers, bicycles, home theatre, boats, cars, motorcycles, watches, etc.

Except guns are designed to inflict suffering on living beings.

Yes, I know they can be used for target practice, and they are supposed to be for self-defense, but the practice is for wounding/killing and the method of self-defense is wounding/killing.

The weirdest thing is seeing those guys who went to war and then are into antique guns. Like they relish the tools of killing fields.

sorry no, its the great equalizer, before the gun, self defense/force was limited to those with physical strength and the willingness to use it.

only guns equalize the power between a thug and a grandma. you want suffering
? a society where the only arms are bladed weapons.

Wow what's the story here??? Why have I been paying 30+ dollars for a color cartridge???

It's been ages since I've been around AnandTech. It's good to see that the Hot Deals is still A1.

I'll be ordering from this place.

🙂

An armed society is a polite society.

People who are weirded out by guns because they CAN kill people weird me out too. Just because someone owns a gun or god forbid even carries one doesn't make them some psychopath that's gonna go on a killing spree and shoot up a school. Talk about paranoid 🙄. I find other hobbies that I don't partake in strange, but just because I don't see the purpose of it doesn't mean it needs to be banned, or feel scared of somebody who enjoys that particular hobby. And I'm sure most people here will agree when I say that I hope to NEVER have to use a gun, or any other weapon for that matter to take another human beings life. A gun should ALWAYS be used as a last resort.

I seriously thought about shooting a ketchup bottle that I couldn't get open tonight. Luckily I didn't reach my last resort
