People who are into guns kinda weird me out

I'll agree with this. Our life is our most valued thing. I am not scared of guns, but I can understand the apprehension of people being around them. A gun can instantly take your life away. End it all. I have a buddy who has a gun and was showing it to me a few months back. It was up on his counter top, loaded. He has a 2 year old son, who probably couldn't reach it, but still. He kind of 'slid' it over to me to show me it. I was fine with handling it. But just the care free nature some people have around these things is crazy to me. And don't go telling me 'well he's an irresponsible owner, most are responsible'.... bullshit.

We all know one thing to be true. People in this world are fucking stupid. All over the place, all the time, fucking stupid people. It amazes me everyday, yet it happens everyday. But somehow you are going to tell me that none of these fucking stupid people have guns, or that they just happen to be not fucking stupid around guns? I don't buy it. There are PLENTY of stupid people who legally own and carry guns. And that scares the shit out of me, because most of them probably have no business with that type of power.
 
I think it depends on your personal experience with guns. If your only experience with a gun is in movies then you are going to have a very negative viewpoint. I grew up in rural areas, for most of my life, where just about every person could get access to a gun if they wanted to either at their own home or a friends. Guns were used for hunting, sometimes protection, but never thought of as something people use to shoot up a school. I don't think the people that are nervous around guns would be so nervous if they actually went to a shooting range and shot off some rounds. It is easy to fear what you have no direct experience with.

Look, when you get into machines you actually make up uses for them. Like, how many people got into building computers and then into SETI, because it was a use for the computer's computational power?

It seems like people who get into guns need to find a use for them, and the uses for them typically involve self-defense scenarios.

No we don't "make up" a use for them, we already have them which is why you get them to begin with, of course a large reason is self defense, what's your issue with that?

If I did I'd get a six shooter, since it is almost watch-like.

My issue with vintage guns is that it's like people are reliving the "good 'ol days" of...going to war. And also that it is likely that many of these tools have actually killed a number of people, while the modern assault rifles honestly haven't killed many people at all.

I should rephrase that: People aren't uncomfortable around shotguns and hunting rifles. People ARE uncomfortable with handguns, especially in populated areas.

If I saw someone carrying around a sword, yes- I would be nervous around them. In fact, there are some videos on Youtube showing people calling the police because some guy is carrying around a sword in public areas.

On a side note, 67% of all murders in the US in 2010 were from firearms.

you nailed it. I can recognize that rifles are used for hunting which is okay. Handguns are purposed for injuring other people (yes, in self-defense, but still, the method is injury of another).

And to answer an earlier question, yes, having a sword pointed at you will make you nervous.

Again, considering ownership it's a vocal minority who are uncomfortable...and even if handguns were to disappear those murders would happen by other means, the tool doesn't make them happen...

So now it has to be pointed at you to make you nervous? Well you should have said that in the first place, of course if someone was pointing a gun at you it should make you nervous...just having it around you though makes you paranoid.
 
Strange, it actually makes me feel more comfortable knowing that basically every house in my rural neighborhood owns firearms.

I feel the same way about dogs. I don't really like dogs at all. Most of the time they're a minor annoyance, but I know that my neighbors dogs will go nuts if they see anyone creeping around my yard at night. I basically get to leech off of their early warning system.

So you're really talking about a fringe minority and not you're average normal everyday person who owns and enjoys firearms, you know the vast vast majority of owners?

And ideally they will treat them with much more respect than a rake or shovel...

yeah. The title says, "people who are into guns", no? Lots of people use computers but a minority are really into them.

When the zombie apocalypse comes, at least you know your neighborhood will be safe. 😉

I neither own a gun nor have I ever used one. However, I grew up in a pretty rural area so I don't have a blind/misguided hatred for guns. I plan on learning how to safely operate and own a firearm, and eventually I will become a gun owner myself.
 
The only gun nuts that weird me out are the ones that pose with their guns for pictures and try to look bad ass.

To me that just screams "little kid" mentality and not someone I would trust with a loaded weapon.

Actually, several of them are "in to" guns. In fact, my nearest neighbor has an extensive collection including a really cool automatic gun with the round clip - looks like something out of Dick Tracey. And, he regularly shoots targets in his yard to make sure his guns are working correctly. I don't see what the big deal is.

Yeah, there's lots of us here who are into guns...really into guns...and I highly doubt any of us fall into the category you are putting forth...but I'm sure we still "make you nervous"
