People support reperations for slaves, but.....

A guy, who happened to be of 'african-american' decent, was talking to my friend in a phlisophy class and the issue of reparations came up. he said that he deserved the reparations cause his ancestors were enslaved by other white folks like my friend. My friend replied with great anger that "I am not paying you a cent. I do not condone anyone who blindly does. You don't even know who i am, yet here you go demanding i repay you for some racial injustice. My parents immigrated to america just 30 years ago FROM GERMANY, believe it or not, i never owned slaves and you're just as racist as the people who did centuries ago"

food for thought i suppose. I agree with my friends response and sums up how i feel about reperations.

U.S. Government funded reparations for the descendents of slaves might be enough to make me leave the U.S.

I wouldn't leave, but it'd be about revolution time.

I think a good riot would be fun.

Reparations = no.

Before you go on about how bad the slaves had it (i'm sure they did, thats not what I'm arguing) none of my ancestors ever owned any of their ancestors, but I'd wind up with the same tax hike as everyone else . . .

fvck, my grandfather practically was a slave, sharecropping in west texas . . . I don't feel any responsibility to the descendants of slaves.

their ansestors suffered, but it was for the better for their decendents, look at where they live now, compared to where they could be living.......

i, nor my decendents, ever owned slaves in this nation, my family did not come over from germany untill the early 1900s

No Africa would have been a thriving metropolis if it weren't for the white man.

The white man isn't entirely to blame. Don't forget the black chieftans that sold people into slavery. White people == buyers. Somebody over there was selling.

I love how everyone pulls this out of their ass. Nevermind that slavery in Africa was MUCH different than it became in the US. Slavery was more of an indentured servitude than it was the back breaking racial degradation it became in the US.

But I don't support reparations and think they're bullshit. Yeah, the Japanese in internments camps got reparations because they were STILL ALIVE. Show me a live slave, and that person should definitely get some loot. But we need to move on and move forward. Sooner we do the sooner racism will continue healing.

Wasn't Slavery a lot more prominent in SA (South America)?

Reparations is the black community looking for ANOTHER handout from Federal piggy.

Still, that does not mean that the issue should not be looked at with a bit of effort. I would on ocassion agree with your argument when it was directed at a select few, but I know quite a few prosperous african americans that refute your argument completely.

And do those prosperous black people want reparations? I'd bet most of them don't.

Reparations are not being asked for to 'right' a wrong performed in the previous generations. Reparations are being asked for by the lazy that won't get off their butts and try to work for their living.

exactly.

Dont usually get in on the hot political debates but I've noticed something no one else brought up.

It seems to me that Jews AND Hebrews throughout the world have suffered a lot more than any other group and they never ask for handouts. Why don't all the people who were conquered by the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and Spanish pipe up and ask for money? All the great empires were much more brutal than those who established the american colonies.
Hell, even the indians never begged this much for stuff, and we practically wiped them out. Put an Indian in front of one of these greedy folks and ask them why HE doesn't deserve anything.
