People support reperations for slaves, but.....

Reparations will serve to void any positive strides that the black community has made since then. By nature, it forces the present to judge the past and pass judgement without the possibility of a reasonable doubt.

I think it is unconstitutional ebcause those accused are not alive to defend themselves. Obviosuly the governemnt is the one who would pay out, but either way, the officials of yesteryear are dead.

More importantly, I fear that it would serve to hurt the black community. I bet many of those that would in line to recieve money would already acoomplished. I would not only find it embarassing but also racially inflamatory.

Let the past die. What sucked is history anyways.

Well you know someone will probably make a new thread "what would you add to the constitution if it were rewritten today." But it's too late and the people who would have the most to say are probably sleeping already (Anubis, MichaelD, Nocmonkey, HappyPuppy, Warcrow, Zim, Marty Mcfly). So that will just have to wait till tomorrow.

Night kids.

I would be open to reparations if the recipients renounce their US citizenship and move to Liberia or another African country.
If they think America did them wrong and owes them money, then they should take that money and leave.

their ansestors suffered, but it was for the better for their decendents, look at where they live now, compared to where they could be living.......

i, nor my decendents, ever owned slaves in this nation, my family did not come over from germany untill the early 1900s

No Africa would have been a thriving metropolis if it weren't for the white man.

White people put a lot of money into Africa. They were buying blacks from blacks after all.

Wasn't quite money, more like guns. Then the Africans used the guns to kill and capture more africans to sell.

Money, goods, one in the same.

Not exactly. Money would have done them now good. Guns allowed them more power.

their african brothers that sold em out should pay.

Yeah, along with most of europe. Hell if reparations are ever granted (which they won't be) then its time to either dust off the M4 carbine for some civil unrest, or move to canada.

Personally I think that the reperations should rather go to a foundation help preventing modern slavery etc.

If modern slavery happens/will happen, it wont be in a civilized nation.

Fuel for the fire:

The African country Liberia was founded by former slaves who returned to their home continent in order to form their own country. The first thing they did was enslave the local tribesmen. Fast forward 200 years and this country is now the most dangerous surreal sh!thole on the planet. It is bad enough to make mogadishu seem like a carnival ride.

Surprisingly, this may be one of the only times I will agree with you.

Stop being so damn lazy and work for what you earn, 'the man' is not keeping you down. What about all the sucessful black citizens? Did they sell out to 'the man' to get where they are today? And besides, I never owned slaves, my grandparents came to America from Italy in the early 1900s. So if anyone wants to get money from me -- over my dead body.

Yes. ANY POSSIBLE good that can come from this is GENEROUSLY outweighed by the harm that it will do.

Modern slavery is still a fact of life in a few places around the world. Hit up google for some disturbing references.

Reparations is the black community looking for ANOTHER handout from Federal piggy.

Still, that does not mean that the issue should not be looked at with a bit of effort. I would on ocassion agree with your argument when it was directed at a select few, but I know quite a few prosperous african americans that refute your argument completely.

I'm not trying to be racially biased, but i think this is a good point: Look at all the other immagrants to this country. Especially during the turn of the century. The Irish and then the Southern Europeans were despised by Americans, yet 100 years later they are equall (at least under the law). No special treatment for them. But, 150 years after slavery and African-American still get preffered treatment (AA) as if they neeed to be pulled along. What I'm saying is that other immigrants were able to adapt and prosper in America (especially Asians) while the black community is continually seen as underprivledged. Of course slavery somewhat of a different situation, but its more their problem then ours.

I hate the NAACP.
I hate how blacks get special treatment because of the NAACP.
Reparations is a huge joke if you ask me. They didn't suffer through anything, their ancestors did. Why should they get paid for it.
Blacks aren't the only race that are discriminated against.

And do those prosperous black people want reparations? I'd bet most of them don't.

Reparations are not being asked for to 'right' a wrong performed in the previous generations. Reparations are being asked for by the lazy that won't get off their butts and try to work for their living.

My grandfather wasn't allowed entry into a union (Read: no union membership, no JOB) because of his Italian lastname.
