It's annoying. That's why you stomp on the pedal - somebody who is casually and unconsciously trying to pace with you will be startled out of that reaction, and you're already gone.

Edit:
Didn't even think of Skiddex's situation, I was thinking normal highway cruising or basic backroads with passing lines.

I do it when I know it won't advance them any positions and I know I can beat their car.

Not only while driving, but when I'm walking and trying to pass somebody, they either slow down, or just move in front of me and try to speed up; which never works.

Isn't it illegal to to do that if you're passing them on a two lane road? I think it is.

Most people go over the speed limit to pass, which is also illegal. ;) Most people do it subconsciously (speed up)

Ah yes I agree. But, I put myself in howards posistion when I drive and let him pass. Prediction is good for less accidents. Or maybe I just have too much time on my hands.

It is usually annoying. But admittedly I sometimes do it if I realize I'm going too slow. Not to keep them behind me, but to get my speed up to where it should be. The unfortunate side-effect is that I block them from passing, which I'm sure is annoying.

However, if I'm going a perfectly decent (IMO) speed and someone passes me on the left, I don't speed up. That's just ignorant. I hate when people do that to me.

Are we talking passing the car in front of you by entering the lane on your left which is for opposite direction traffic or trying to pass someone on the right?

I let people pass who pass on the left.

If someone jumps into the right hand lane and tries to pass me I speed up if there is a car in front of them in that lane to keep them from being able to pass because they shouldn't be passing on the right.

If someone trying to pass me causes me to realize I'm driving slow as fuck, I wait until after they get in front of me to speed back up. I use my cruise control 99% of the time anyways, and when I'm not I usually go out of my way to let people pass if they need to. I've been screwed over so many times trying to get onto campus because some fuckbag in a minivan or some Civic that thinks it's the shit won't let me get in front of it. It's even worse when they speed up and close up an opening that was just the right size to pass through, and then the douches behind them all decide to speed up.

If you are in California as your profile states and the traffic on your right is going the opposite direction, you're driving on the wrong side of the road.

Nope, you're just a better driver than many.

I don't understand why some people find it so hard to maintain a constant speed.

while it can be annoying, I also understand people who aren't overly aware while driving will naturally pace themselves to other cars. I also notice this while walking. When i am passing a person or people, their pace usually speeds up to match mine, or after I pass them they usually are keeping up with me.

This is one of my pet peaves, if someone is obviously driving faster than you, why must you be a DB and block them from passing? You're the one potentailly causing an accident.

There is only one time where it is acceptable to do this:

When you are driving in the left lane in fairly heavy traffic, and someone behind you decides to be a jackass and try to pass you on the right (even though they will just get stuck behind the car in front of you).

I never let people pass me like that. I always get a good kick out of watching them get stranded in the right lane after I close the gap, and they end up like 10 cars behind where they started.
