you're using it wrong

Steam is godsent

As software Steam itself is decent and Valve games are awesome, but their extremely restrictive implementation of DRM and ridiculous policies make Steam crap and a ripoff to gamers.

Steam works well for internet based MP games, but is a pain for single player games when you don't have a reliable internet connection. Impulse is a much better digital distribution system in those cases (since you don't need to have an internet connection to play any game). Offline mode is a joke, in that you can't set it when you actually need it (when your internet connection goes down), you can only set it while connected. I hope that gets fixed at some point, or hopefully already has since I haven't been paying attention to Steam for a while.

(I guess that's another vote for valve- although I kinda get bored playing through the half life series.)

I know, DRM which actually helps us enjoy games, terrible....

Agreed steam is awesome, no need to keep CD's or activation codes. If I want to revisit an old game just reload it from steam and I'm good.

You can set offline mode in two ways. When you start Steam and your pc is connected to a router or cable modem, Steam will think there is an active internet connection and will try connecting for a while. Eventually it will ask you if you want to do offline mode. The other method is if you unplug your network cable from your pc, or just disable your network connection, Steam will instantly ask you if you want to play in offline mode.

The hate on Steam is a joke. It's the best thing to happen to PC gaming in years. I'm almost to the point where I would refuse to buy a game that isn't on Steam.

Don't get them fucking started on the Steam DRM diatribe or you will never hear the end of it. They will bitch and moan until their throats go dry and they keel over from exhaustion.

This was based on my experience trying to get Call of Juarez to work while my internet connection was down. It just refused to work. I later googled to find out how to run offline mode (since I remember doing this before) and found a few threads that said you needed to set offline mode while you are online. This made no sense to me, since you don't always know when you will need offline mode in advance, nor do most people actually plan out their game playing (since it is a form of entertainment that you do when you are bored or stressed out.)

I like Steam, I liked Stardock Central better though. Impulse is ok as a digital distribution application as well. I just wish that Offline mode was simpler and easier to do, without it trying to connect for 5 minutes before the option came up. (Which it didn't even do in the above example.) I also wish that Steam had a smaller footprint, so that it didn't take up as many resourses ontop of the resources that the games need.

Most of the time I find viral marketing to be pretty annoying, but Valve's efforts have been pretty ingenious. They sure have done an awesome job of keeping the legs under TF2. It's been out for over 18 months and they're still adding significant content for free, generating buzz, and attracting new players. These guys know what they're doing. Say what you will about Steam...

And you rise to defend it every time by telling people to stop bitching about real issues. Your baseless commentary serves no purpose. Kindly STFU unless you can offer something of substance to the discussion.

Personally, I don't mind Steam, but I acknowledge that it is without a doubt a restrictive form of DRM. Its hindrance of resale is not just a major concern for some people, but infringes on consumer rights. And the "doomsday scenario" in which customers can no longer play games because Steam is down/gone/whatever is legit.
