Think of carriers as the 'pieces' of electrical charge that are minuplated (moved) to change the state of memory bits.

Semiconductor material is doped ("impurities" added) to create the existance of these carriers.

(you need the minority carriers to have a long lifetime... or so the article goes.) If the population of carriers changes or the lifetime of them is shortened, the RAM is degraded. (OK, that's my simplified mind trying to understand... I may be WAY off. 😱 )
