Pentium D or Pentium 4

hi i wanted to know if pentium d is better than pentium 4 as in building a new computer and what the main differences are. im looking at the pentium D 950 or 960. is that a good processor.

also its 64bit which i think means i need a 64bit operating system, please correct me if im wrong

thanks in advance

Or a higher end is good too depending on what you're looking for. Windows XP Professional for example is 32 bit, but the Windows XP Pro 64 bit is 64 bit.

i looked at the core 2 duo and they are really expensive. i want to spend about £400 - £500 alltogether on a computer without a screen, keyboard etc. i would preferrebly want to use the website www.ebuyer.co.uk as it is quite cheap compared to the other sites. please help me choose a really good processor and motherboard ( preferrebly on board video as i dont play games but the option to add on ) for about £200.

thanks

Well, to answer your main question on P4 vs Pentium D, the real question is do you want single core or dual core? If you don't know the answer to this, then perhaps some more research is in order.

Also, is there a reason you want to buy one of these processors? Do you have an old motherboard that it is going into? Both of these processors are quite dated versus a Core 2 Duo.

dual core, i have decided that im going to get the pentium d 950. can you get a pentium d hyper threading chip?

im getting the intel D945GCZ motherboard

http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/d945gcz/index.htm

what ram do i need? eg 4 512mb or 2 1gb. DDR2 667, DDR2 533

thanks
You can get a hyperthreading Pentium D, but they are BIG $$. They are the "Extreme Editions".

whats better hyperthreading P4 or Pentium D dual core

also what about the ram? whats matched pair? is 4 512mb or 2 1gb better?

thanks

There is no reason in the world why anyone should be buying Pentium Ds or Pentium 4s when AM2, s939, or C2D are similarly priced & will destroy the Pentiums in performance.

I'm not trying to be rude to you naimcohen, but buying a Pentium of any kind right now = omgwtf 😕

i agree. with the E6300 outperforming basically all of the pentium processors (p4, pentium D, etc), there is absolutely no reason to buy a netburst-based processor.

this may be a supid questin but isnt the pentium d 950 at 3.4 ghz better than the Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe Processor at 2.4GHz

thanks

I posted a link to the review, did you read it? That should show you that core 2 duo IS better. Now, the why:

Think of the CPU as the engine in a car, an F1 race car engine has very high RPM, but it has low torque. A buss engine has lower RPM but a lot more torque. IF you want to shift a lot of weight around the bus engine would obviously be better. Core 2 is the equivalent of the Bus engine, it can do more for each clock cycle than the old Pentium D could. So while it might only run at 1.8Ghz it does more work than the Pentium D running at 3.4Ghz.

For the same money as the 6300 you're looking at a 940. That would be thrashed to bits by a 6300.

oh i didnt see the review, ill read it now.

so if i were to get the core 2 is it 1 processor or is it 2 processors?

also is there a intel motherboard i can use it with from that website?

thanks
