It's a single CPU, but it has two cores, (essentially two CPUs in one box). It will work fine with XP home if you're wondering.

Edit: None of the Intel boards they list are Conroe Compatible, which is a pain in the rear.

No, there is nothing better. Well, not unless you spend more money and you get a faster Core 2 Duo chip ;)

Other sites? Yeah you can find them there, but rembmer you're paying an extra £10 for shipping that way, also the only intel boards out that support Core 2 Duo are more expensive than that Asus board, in the region of £80+

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Intel.html
dabs don't have any at all on their site for less than £100.

Edit:

Just found your other thread. You don't need more than onboard graphics? In which case you could afford a faster C2D CPU and 2GB of RAM.

Depends what you're doing with it, the 6600 is around 30% faster than the 6300. But if you're not doing video encoding etc. then you'll never need that much speed. Also it's got 4MB cache rather than 2Mb which is another 5% or so performance increase.

Post exactly the applications that you use, prioritize them in the order you use them (heaviest first)...
Sit back, relax and let us pick the perfect CPU for your needs.

No kidding, we'll find the perfect CPU for you...
Hunt down the cheapest place to find it...
All you'll have to do is pay for it

RAM: it's about equal to buy two sticks as to buy a matched pair, so you might as well get a matched pair (but make sure you get value RAM).

6400: 2MB cache, but the cache isn't all that important. 15% faster than the 6300 and around 30% more expensive.
6600: 4MB cache, ~35% faster and 100% more expensive.

The 6400 is a good balance. Edit: and what Blain said.

is kingston a good brand? or crucial?

both are good processors.

however, the pentium D will outperform the Pentium 4.

the other guy is right, dBTelos; the PD is a better choice for cost versus performance.

if you are trying to build a cheap computer but will still run apps, get the Celeron D for 40 bucks. otherwise the Pentium 4 and the Pentium D, early class competition will hit a hundred bucks.

so you got the Pentium D, featuring two cores, or the P4 with only one core at the same price. Prescott model of the P4, stay away from, that was 2003, when enthusiasts were willing to let the heat issue not worry them a whole lot. It's 2006? Get the Pentium D, it's latter models are cooler in temp.

conroe, yeah, but that's 200 bucks for a CPU. if you just want a running system, you can get a CPU for a hundred bucks and spend 50 bucks on a reliable running mobo and the other 50 bucks on maybe 768 megs of RAM.

the Pentium D is not becoming too far outdated yet. the PD is only taking one step down the stairs as the conroe is readying to take over for Intel's primary performance chip.

WRONG...
I started out trying to help the guy with his question. You would have known that IF you had actually read my posts.
It degenerated into sarcasm and "Read similar threads" posts after the guy starts in with redundant replies.

Is that a fair assessment of the situation?

Case and point.

"(post 10,483)"

Mostly ignored.
