<< The Pentagon is developing plans to provide news items, possibly even false ones, to foreign media organizations
as part of a new effort to influence public sentiment and policy makers in both friendly and unfriendly countries, military
officials said.
>>

this reeks. seems as if a few of our military people are graduates of dubya's oxymoronic school of foreign policy
expertise.

certain foreign peoples have enough trouble believing our side of the story. now a few well-placed idiots in the
pentagon have found a possible virtue in lying. as if our credibility cannot take any worse a hit in the nations we
are targeting with this misinformation campaign, why lie ? dumb (as in dumbya - nice, eh ?)

all the critics of of u.s. policy need is reason not to trust any information pumped out by our military and state
department yokels. everyone will now simply claim its false, regardless of its supposedveracity, and they'll point
to the pentagon's own written policies.

aah, a pentagon employee crawls out of his dung hole. this policy has not yet been approved, but judging from
your early efforts, it does not seem you'll be able to bait a single soul. if you can find where i believed the 'taliban
casualty counts', i'll gratefully withdraw all the complements above. if you can't, he he . . .

vesp.,
well, contrary to the false propaganda (as noted above), i do care about foreign policy that is well-applied,
effective, and not foolish. this is inane to the hilt and can only be more ruinous to our foreign policy aims
than the war mongering of our el presidente.

How do you expect to persuade anyone when in every one of your posts you have to make some inane comment about President Bush being a dumbass? You're not very intellectual.

syzygy, do you wake up every morning and ask yourself, "What can I do to stir up trouble in Off Topic today?".

I'm paraphrasing Churchill "In war, the truth is so important, it must be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies"

OPSEC, PSYOPS, Deception and Perception Management. The military principles of surprise and initiative.

Any of these terms ring a bell?

you say as if its a bad thing :p

honestly, nothing outside the norm :p

honestly, truly, obviously though, am i being faulted for having a p.o.v. counter to the prevailing viking mood around
here ?

so i don't jump on the war wagon, bang the pots and pans, and scream for blood till i'm gurgling blood. bush has
executed a few moves - ok, one move, so far, but worrisome nonetheless - that i think could jeopardize important
political evolutions overseas, and now a policy of official lying is gaining ascendancy amongst the very people who
cannot afford to lie ! ! ! i mean this is so so . . . uh .. ah. . . . bad. capish ?

nice. but is a bodyguard of lies the best defense for (political) truths that you are trying to sell to a people who
already mistrust you ? what happens when you throw gasoline over the fire, especially when you've announced
your plans to do so before the whole world ? not smart, possibly ?

It's a proposal to set up a PR office for the US. The disinformation part has NOT been approved yet.

I can see how some might think this form of campaign would be usefull. Look at the democratic election ploy of proclaiming that Bush is dumb. The repeated it often enough and widely enough that some gulliable people to this day believe it. Misinformation can be effective providing that the person does not seek the truth.

yes, i've heard something here and there about them. i need your help though . . . since you mentioned 'the
military principles of surprise and initiative' under which of the categories you mentioned above does the fact
fall under that i was able to learn about this possible move on a web page visited by a millions of people per
year ? is it opsec ? psyops ?

just maybe there's also be some money alloted in the pentagon budget for them to advertise their intentions
in full-color news ads in tehran, baghdad, or p'yongyang ? its illogical to us, but not to our people in 'military
intelligence'.
