The Pentagon said Monday that Chinese ships harassed a U.S. surveillance ship Sunday in the South China Sea in the latest of several instances of "increasingly aggressive conduct." The Pentagon says the USNS Impeccable, a surveillance ship, was on routine patrol in the South China Sea. During the incident, five Chinese vessels "shadowed and aggressively maneuvered in dangerously close proximity to USNS Impeccable, in an apparent coordinated effort to harass the U.S. ocean surveillance ship while it was conducting routine operations in international waters," the Pentagon said in a written statement. The crew members aboard the vessels, two of which were within 50 feet, waved Chinese flags and told the U.S. ship to leave the area, the statement said. "Because the vessels' intentions were not known, Impeccable sprayed its fire hoses at one of the vessels in order to protect itself," the statement said. "The Chinese crewmembers disrobed to their underwear and continued closing to within 25 feet." After the Impeccable alerted the Chinese ships "in a friendly manner" that it was seeking a safe path to depart the area, two of the Chinese ships stopped "directly ahead of USNS Impeccable, forcing Impeccable to conduct an emergency 'all stop' in order to avoid collision," the statement said. "They dropped pieces of wood in the water directly in front of Impeccable's path."

The Chinese military has been doing squirrelly stuff like this off and on for a while - one of these days some serious shit is going to happen because of this idiotic behaviour.

Edit: Link fixed; the original article on CNN has been expanded.

I am sure there is a lot more to it. That ship is for detection of submarines, the attempt to classify it as a more "merchant" type ship is a deliberate obfuscation. I wouldn't doubt the surface ships were running interference for something going on underwater.

This ship is nothing more than an upgrade of the old SURTASS ships.

Sounds like the Chinese don't want us anywhere near them, including in international waters. Escort Impeccable and Victorious with something heavily-armed, and see if the Chinese still want to play stupid games.

Wait, so you are telling us that it is perfectally acceptable to harass other ships in open international water? Sorry, but that is just crazy stupid and ill-informed.

Hell even on a lake getting within 25 feet of another boat and zipping around them may get you some pretty damn ugly looks. I couldn't imagine this happening on open waters.

There probably was a US attack sub somewhere in the neighborhood keeping an eye on things too. Mk 48 ADCAPs > POS Chinese frigate

It is a big deal. Obama is being tested. The Chinese will wait and see how Obama reacts to North Korea. Then that will determine how they will deal with Taiwan in the future.

96 ICBMS are currently en route to key targets in North Korea. I have this direct from the head of NORAD.

That won't intimidate the Chinese, they can't even hear it.

Yeah and they probably had one of their super quiet diesel subs in the area too, you the know the ones we can't seem to detect.

Diesels are effectively silent when running on battery power at very low speed. Such is life.

Well next time send a couple of submarines to enforce their safety. Then we will see if they really have what it takes to operate military vessels. Sooner or later we have to test their mettle.
