Pentagon develops new weapon - this thing RUles!

seems to me like it would be a good idea, but who do they use as the test dummies? I would hate to be them incase something goes wrong 😛

It said test dummies are going to be goats and humans this year.
Question was raised at end of article about eyes...my guess would be try not to get hit in the eyes.

I remember reading a while back that law enforment agencies were working on a paralysis beam. It more or less froze someone in their tracks. Problem was that at this point in time it so big that it had to be mounted on the back of a truck 🙂

Wonder if the military could get together with the police forces to tag team on this project 🙂

$40 million spent on that thing? I can just play tapes of callers from work. Talk about painfully stupid. It affects everyone around them.

So go post there, you butt. 😀

I read the story and thought about Command & Conquer (and more generally how science fiction predicts science fact) -- fascinating stuff. I just find the claim that it's non-lethal dubious because there's nothing stopping them from increasing the intensity to boil their insides (which would be gruesome but highly effective).

All this non-lethal crap is stupid. Say you're in a war, you see your best friend get capped right next to you. Are you gonna pull out your "pain beam", and "ooh! muscle jerks"! Maybe in some police hostage situations this will be a good thing, but I don't see why they blew tax payers money to fund research on this.

because ragingbitch its not meant as a combat weapon against armed soldiers. Its meant to be used against civilians in a policing environment. It could be used by peace keepers or riot police or whatever. Anyway $40 million in research is chump change.

Yep, if I owned a phaser you'd see it on MAXIMUM KILL SETTING all the time...unless I'm looking for a mate...then I might use STUN. 😉

It probably causes skin cancer, but because it's not a drug, or chemical, or whatever, it won't be heavily tested for safety. BTW, sonigrams are not safe!

The Marine Corps plans to mount the microwave weapon on top of Humvees, the Jeep-like vehicles used by both the Marines and the Army

Wouldn't this be more practical if it were more portable.

It's gonn abe used, if ever produced, to stop protest marches, demonstrations and such, not good in my view 🙁

I don't know if it would be that useful. Like mentioned, old people would probably have a heart attack and little kids ... well yeah. $40 million doesn't seem that bad.

The weapon could be fielded by 2009, officials said.

Wow don't be too quick. They have a prototype and will begin testing on humans this year yet it takes them 8 years to actually get it used?

If you only would have read the article you would notice how this is not intended for combat situations. It is designed for peace keeping missions where deadly force would only get them into a lot of trouble. ZAP!!!

Oooh.. neato.. I can see it now "Anandtech buckles down on neffers by emmitting pain beam from computer monitors"
