I haven't heard much about the release or availability of the 45nm penryn parts from Intel. They already have the model numbers up on their site. Does anyone know when I can expect to be purchasing a quad core Penryn?

you could have bought a quad core penryn since nov 2007 and a dual core penryn is offically released next monday, although many places have them today. check the "hot deals" forum

the non extreme quad core penryns come out april 20th tentatively

The E8400's have been for sale at various sites since Wednesday and are available at MicroCenter stores for in the $180 range right now. As for the Quads, I don't know when they'll be released.

Where did you see April 20th? First, it was January 20th (or so), then it was supposedly late first Quater. Now it's slipped to 2nd Quarter? Uh...(maybe I'm confused)?

Schedule and prices from VR-Zone that was posted yesterday still lists Jan. 20th.

April 20th is worse than reported (Intel has revised their launch date q9xxx chips to Q1 08). I thought Feb. or March?

jared, i believe you're confusing the april 20th price cut info with release dates. i've googled for april 20th quad core release and see numerous references to the price cut date of april 20th..nothing changing relative to Q1 release date of feb or march. i would bet if they are going to stick with a commitment of a Q1 release date (and i can tell you that ncix has stated recently that they continue to be told by intel that they will have quads in their hands to sell before end of Q1), that they wait until march. just my gut feel.

and, a good segue to point out for anyone who doesn't understand a quarter as per someone's comment in another thread (not anyone here, i don't think) that a quarter is a quarter..not a third:) (in reference to someone who said in the first quarter meant between january and end of april) last i heard a quarter was 3 months, not 4..LOL:)

np:) and who knows..the way it's going and if any of the talk is true that intel wants to clear the 6600s out of the channel as much as possible, it could be june..i'll believe any date, when i have one in my greedy little hand. likely going to go for the 9550 rather than the 9450 simply because when they do come out, i think they'll be so far back ordered it'll be insane to try to get one.

i'm hoping..and i'm not a fan of the pre-order process unless they can tell me quantities they will have in hand and where i'm at on the list. and i'm in canada so shipping would be a bee atch:) i could order it at ncix but i think they would charge me the full pop right away, and again no stock guarantee..my 6400 is working just fine, i can wait until i see stock that i can get access to with express shipping at ncix with a 2 day turnaround..and, there is something to be said that the 1st batch of them may not be as good as the next stepping, right? so, there maybe logic to letting others be the guinea pigs:)

i believe it's 8.5 in the 9550..

now that i think about it, my gigabyte p35 ds4 better have a half multi or the 9550 would be a waste..i think it will though given they issued bioses that were "yorkfield compatible" a few versions back...but have had 45nm support from the start..but a .5 multi won't show in the bios unless you have a processor that will provide the half stepping.

agreed..a 9650 part at say 700 dollars max would have been a consideration for me if i was prepared to buy a 9550 at 589 bucks...but i'm not so crazy to drop 1000 bucks 1 for a qx9650.

Ive got a link to a guy ocing a q9550 over at xtremesystems

lemme look for it, i dont know ifyou plan to oc, but this time with penryn Multiplier makes the biggest difference. people are doing suicide benchmark runs of 5000+mhz on air in that forum. to do that with a 8x multi, you need a 630mhz fsb. Thats where the qx series really shows its value, because you can go as high as your hearts content while maintaining a 400-450mhz fsb.

yeah, it's posted here somewhere as well in the past week..saw that 6 gig attemp. i'm not going to be overclocking beyond 3 gig so no worries for me:) 8.5 x 353 or so...i'll more likely then likely go 8 x 375 if i can keep the voltage low so there maybe logic for me to go with the 9450 if i can wait it out..nice to have a bit of multi options though:) i'll do as i currently do and create an undervoltage profile..and an overclock profile and switch as i feel the desire:)

jared: can't say i don't envy those going for the 8400 but for me? frankly, it's a better 6400..i want some quad core fun..or i don't bother switching at all:)

cheex: long time no chat, man..hope things are well..that all sounds good. i look forward seeing you get to 4..and i don't think you'll find it very difficult:)

so for a 9x multiplier on a e8400 it's..

Easy
@ 400 - 3.6GHz
@ 425 - 3.825GHz
@ 450 - 4.05GHz

Effort
@ 475 - 4.25GHz <----I'll probably end up here.

Miracle
@ 500 - 4.5GHz

I'm well, just financially constrained as usual...:p

You think I can get 500FSB (4GHz) out of a P35-DS4?

I mean, I already know my RAM can do 1000.

with enough volts,i think so..then again, i haven't done it:) but i'm starting to see people saying it has the overclocking capability of a 965 ds3 which could..and i did:) to have a shot, though, i think you'd have to go back to the f8 bios..f11 i don't think will do it..said to not overclock as well. i'm happy if i can get 400 without much volts on the cpu.

My DS3 maxes out at 450. Unless there is an FSB hole somewhere there, don't think so though.

If it is in fact an FSB hole, what FSB value could I try, up from 450?

i'd try 475 or 480. that was actually easier for me to get to with the ds3 then 435 to 450. just felt easier. 2.2 on my volts (that was with 6400 memory at 4-4-4-12), +.2 on my mch and system volts...cpu at 1.38 ish i recall. still have the board..have to keep it as it was my first 500 fsb board..
