3 year bowl ban

losing a shit-ton of scholarships

huge fines

It's ridiculous to say that the death penalty would have been 'preferable' in discussing losing scholarships - it's not like all 85 people on scholarship play every week.

Will it hurt the program? Of course - is it worse than the death penalty? Not even close - they will still have their home games be sellouts, still bring in a shit-ton of cash - in other words, it's still Penn State football.

I really think the program should have been shut down for a year, but that is apparently just me.

NCAA fail. Considering what Penn St did this is a slap on the wrist. They did the minimum not to look bad to the sheeple out there. 30 million to this school is pennies, a 3 year bowl ban is pretty laughable for the crimes they committed.

Holy shit...

All wins from 1998 to 2011 vacated. Joe Paterno is no longer the winningest coach in D1 football.

$60,000,000 fine, 10 scholarships per year for four years, no bowls for four years, five years of probation, and a litany of compliance steps.

Bravo to President Emmert. He explicitly stated the NCAA's ultimate purpose is to make young people and their schools better for having played sports, and that a winning at all costs mentality is unacceptable.

Good, he just talked about PSU's lack of perspective in putting its football culture ahead of the values of the academy.

Still a very small slap on the wrist. I think I've heard they get over 1.5 Billion in endowments each year. 60 million is really nothing to these schools. Now other schools can weigh if the opportunity cost of doing heinous things vs losing 60 million, a few years of bowl ban, some scholarships etc.

If they nuked this program for a 5 years or 10 years other schools would be like "woah" I better not pull that crap. Now they're like "meh" it's worth the risk to coverup because the punishment isn't that severe.

this is still going? I'm not much of a football fan, college no less... but how does a defensive coordinator become so famous that he gets his own statue?

I haven't followed it much either, but I'm pretty sure the statue was of the head coach. He knew about the raping and did nothing about it.

Seems fair to me, the program will be hobbled for years regardless but shutting it down completely has untold economic repercussions for a lot of innocent bystanders.

I think it will overall be a pretty big deal. You're not factoring in how much monetary contributions to the school will drop off.

Yep, taking Paterno's wins was the most important part of this. So who's number one now, Bowden?

The fine should have been bigger but meh. 4 year Bowl ban is perfectly fine with me. While it could have been more severe, this is a huge blow since their football games will mean shit in the grand scheme (i.e. PLAYOFFS!) of things for the next four years unless they upset someone. What'd be cool is if PSU beat a contender during these four years is that it wouldn't count (i.e. just the same as a scrimmage). But you can't get everything I suppose.

Consequences to people who did not facilitate this atrocity do not concern me. Throw Spanier in jail to rot along with the rest of those clowns who let this happen.

Yep, slap on the wrist. Peanuts in the grand scheme of things and supporters will still value PSU football over those kids. Program needed to eliminated for at least a decade.

First, it's not $1.5 million per year. That's the total amount they have in investments from past donations. Typically a school will use some of the return on investment to grow the endowment to keep up with inflation, and use the remainder of the return to run the school.

Second, you know Penn State is a group of colleges with nearly 100,000 students, right? It's not just a football team. That endowment is the school's, not the football team's.

Hopefully, the Big Ten kicks them out of the league later today.

Joe Paterno is now 13th All-Time in wins. Good.

LOL, the NCAA waiving scholarship limits to any school accepting penn state transfers = every penn state player getting the fuck out of there.

I've got mixed feelings about this. For one thing, almost everyone associated with the whole coverup has already "left" so it's not really affecting them. This is really hurting the students instead. For at least 1 generation if not 2, people will always remember Penn State as that school that supports pedos. Imagine if you're in your junior or senior year and you don't give a shit about football or know anything about the football program and now this shit will be hanging over your head.

What really needs to be done is they need to take everyone involved with the coverup/pedo shit and hang them high. And the whiny bitches that support Paterno need to be slapped in the face (or falcon punched, I'm good with either).

wow slightly harsher then i thought it would be.the 60mil is more then i thought but they are allowing 10 scholarships (i said no) and no bowls for 4 years (i figured 2).

but by far the worst thing i see is all wins from 98-2011 vacated? bwhahahahah oh man i wish joePA was alive to see this!

Has there been any actual talk of this? I'd love to see the Big Ten actually back up their claims of ethical superiority...

I am not sure what the mob wanted, but this is what I expected:

1) Fine that equals or exceeds the yearly football season.
2) Scholarship reduction to hurt the future revenue.
3) Punishing the legacy of the man who thought hiding it was more profitable than bringing this to light.

This is what happened.
