Plane towing a sign over Penn State today: "Take down the statue or we will"

I don't think Penn State has much choice, even before this latest stunt. The damn statue will be such a distraction and a target for trouble that I don't see why they would not remove it anyway.

I think jjsole is correct, though. It will be moved to some far more secure location. Far too many P Staters will ever be willing to accept that this man was committing extreme acts of evil by allowing his pedo friend to continue raping boys. None of that will ever be enough to trump is supposed history of "always doing the right thing." Even though, we now have every reason to believe that such was never true, even before this incident.

That statue is fucked no matter where it ends up. Sure JoPa coached football at Penn State for many decades. Unfortunately his legacy is that he's a guy who enabled a child rapist to avoid lawful penalty and to continue ruining lives. Next time I'm in PA I'll be sure to take a giant piss on his tombstone.

Colin Cowherd had an interesting take on the statue; leave it up as a reminder of the mistakes that were made. Ignoring the past is what got Penn State into this mess in the first place, and if you don't learn from history you're doomed to repeat it. Personally, I disagree, but it's an interesting idea. I just think that in 80 or 90 years, people may not remember the scandal, just see the statue and assume it's a local hero. Meanwhile, I don't think anyone currently at Penn State is going to need a statue of JoePa to remind them of the fall of an icon.

Get rid of it. Time to move on.

Penn State didn't ignore the past. They looked at the past, and ignored the present--creating a worse future for several young boys.

Sorry, I paraphrased that poorly. It was more along the lines of "Penn State covered stuff up, and taking down this statue is just another way of covering things up," ie, it goes against the lessons that Penn State should be learning from this. Regardless, I disagree with that, and think the statue needs to come down.

There will always be a group of vocal idiots in every organization. I highly doubt those people (some idiot college kids) are representative of PSU football fans as a whole.

Have you ever been to State College? I traveled there when I was an undergrad for a football game and the Cult of JoePa is real and tangible. I gave up counting the number of products bearing "JoePa" on it somewhere: JoePancakes, JoePa hoagies, JoePa Cup o' Joe, JoePa this, JoePa that; hell, I even saw JoePanties...how fucked up is it to have a withered old man's mug on your ass?

There are references to Bo in Ann Arbor, Woody in Columbus, Alvarez in Madison, Knight in Bloomington, etc., but State College was beyond over the top in its creepy idolatry. I thought back then those people were bizarre. Apparently, it's not in a good way. :p

well, people have been complaining about how getting rid of football, if only for a few years "would punish the fans."

...punish? what punishment? I think once these dingleberries go without football for a few years they'll realize other things in life matter far more.

I was crazy about football/basketball in college. My biggest fear at the time, just after graduating and moving across the country, was how I would ever be able to watch every game! D:

Yeah, I got over that pretty damn quick.

I know not all fans here are like these naive asshats, but PSU football is a unique institution in many ways.

Bo spent 20 years at Mich, 27 years for Woody, 15 for Barry, 29 for Knight. Joe spent 61 (45 as head) years coaching at PSU, it's not even close. That amount of time, with the overwhelming (overt) positive impact (now having changed, of course) what would you expect? Of course they'll merchandise the Hell of out it. Joe coached 3 times longer than most of PSU's students have been alive. So I'm not sure from where the surprise is coming. That said, I sure as Hell wouldn't want any of that merchandise now. I imagine their will be some serious filler for landfills in the near future.

You honestly believe that? Rabid fans will be rabid fans. A few years without football will, of course, be a punishment; but a re-prioritization occurring? I just don't see it.

I know not all fans here are like these naive asshats, but PSU football is a unique institution in many ways.

What exactly is unique about it in regard to the fans that is so different than any other big program?
