Pearl Harbor Day

Anyone else notice the flags are at half staff? I didn't know they flew flags at half staff on Pearl Harbor Day.

Yes, I lowered mine this morning.

My thoughts and prayers are for those who fought and died on this day.

I had a vetern just come in....

described to me the invasiov fleet for Japan...obviously it was a no go, but he said there were more ships for that than for Normandy.

My grandfather said that on Dec. 8, him and all his friends went to the local town to sign up for the military. He said there was a huge line of people, and he had to wait for hours to sign up.

Much different times, much better people.

My grandfather was supposed go into Japan during Operation Olympic. Thankfully that didn't happen or I might not be posting today.

One of his brothrs was not so lucky, as his destroyer was torpedoed out from under him in the Atlantic by a U-boat.

If it wasn't for the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor, would the US have the power it currently enjoys?

Probably not, but I'm not gonna go around thanking them for it 😉

These the same "better" people that setup the concentration camps for the Japanese living in America?

Better does not imply perfect.

Better doesn't mean perfect. Take any group of people at any time in history and I'll find a fault. That doesn't trump the claim that the WWII generation was better than today's.

Then again, no other generation in the history of the country has faced anything of the magnitude they did.

I'm not trying to minimize what my grandfathers and several uncles did during the war, quite the contrary. I'm only saying that I believe that today's generation could accomplish the same thing if faced with what my grandparent's generation did.

Sure beats the concentration camps set up by the Germans, or what the Japanese did to the Chinese.

Obviously that doesn't justify it, but honestly, it would seem a lot more reasonable if you'd just been attacked out of the blue and didn't know who might be a spy.

If they had the modern American press, they would have declared the war lost after Pearl Harbor or Kasserine.

I agree.
My point was "better" is a subjective term.

I'd like to believe that, but judging from some people here I just don't know. Of course, the population here isn't exactly a representative sample I suppose...
