Exactly, LuBug! It totally depends on what you want to do with it.

I made the decision about a month ago. I was very close to buying the iPAQ, just because it had all the "gadgets". And it would be so unlike me, to buy anything less. ;)

So anyway, I started REALLY thinking what I needed it for. And I finally decided that I didn't need the extras of the iPAQ. Most everyone in my line of work has a PDA. Some have PocketPC's, some have Palm-based. I've spoken to many people that own the PocketPC's that say they wish they'd gotten something simpler, because they just don't need all the features.

Btw, I'm very glad I went with the Visor Deluxe.

You see, I'm one of those people that NEED all of those extra features :) Last night, I took my latest Dave Matthews album that I had ripped to 192kbps MP3 format from my new CD and sent it over to an 80MB compactflash card.

I popped the card in my iPAQ, plugged in the headphones into the stereo jack and blasted my music, and switching between browsing Avantgo, zipping up some files using Resco zipper, and doing some stuff with File Explorer. All with no skipping on behalf of the iPAQ. After I finished listening to the whole album, I unplugged the CompactFlash card and inserted my wireless LAN card and surfed the forums from bed and made a few posts to the Brighthand BBS.

iPAQ owner for 3 days...

loving it... just remember: you can never "tweak" or "customize" something TOO much... mine is completely tweaked... now if they just had "skins" for this entire pocketpc CE... hmmm...like porting windowblinds to the pocketpc...

my damn ipaq will be a dual-boot linux box someday! ha!

Stinger is coming.

I messed up my Cassiopeia E-11 when Win2K crashed while it was connected. The PDA still works fine, but I can't sync. I'm tryin to hold out for Stinger PDA phones that should be in the US soon.

I have a Casio EM-500 and I find new uses for it everyday. If you're going to spend that much $$$ on a color PalmOS PDA, you might as well look at the Pocket PC PDAs. IMO, they are infinitely more useful than Palms.

I personally have a handspring visor plat. Very nice little toy and i don't think i'm gonna sell it any time soon. If you want to spend the extra money and go color, go for it, but never saw it as a big think for me. The ipaq is a great PDA as well.

I'd make the decision between the two but first, trying out both an see which one you like best, then going to work and see what the standard is..Depending on your working enviorment it might be better to "follow the croud" and get the same model for sharing, networking and work specific programs, reasons..

Unless you really need the color, I would save the cash on the Prism and just go with the Handspring Deluxe or Platinum (faster). The expandability of the Visor makes it superior to the Palm offerings IMO. You can add a phone, GPS, digital camera, or wireless modem via the expansion slot, just to name a few. All total, I think there are something like 120 Springboard modules available for it (see the list here: Springboard Modules).

Of course, I am getting an IPAQ, because I need the challenge/response capabilities of IE and the expandability of PCMCIA for our wireless LAN at work. Sadly, I am unlikely to ever find one in stock! But I was at a conference last week and the Compaq rep. told me there is a new model coming out soon with even more memory, so I think I'm going to wait, since you can't use the memory expansion slot and the PCMCIA slot at the same time.

Just my $.02.

I'm planning to buy one after summer. I'm contemplating too. Palm and iPaq each has its own advantages and disadvanteages. I'll probably just wait until new models are out.

you know if you dont have that much money you can also get a black&White retail iPAQ w/ same features for $350!!!! so you dont have to pay extra for color! and

INGUYEN----YOURE WRONG. do you know how much it takes to fit a 2hr movie w/ sound and vhs quality??? only 128mb bro!!! my friend encoded 6movies and works like a charm! i loaded QUAKE last nite and its fast!! yes you can play QUAKE also on it!! about the battery life.. it lasted me 12hrs today... but why you need more than 12-13hrs unless you dont sleep at night! you can just recharge in the night and WALLA the battery is fully charged and ready to go!! you dont need full 24hrs for it to be on.. and btw i would like to add that the speaker of the ipaq is pretty powerful!!!! its very clear and loud for mp'3 and the buttons are very soft when you play games! in my opinion you can find a color ipaq for $400 if you search around good on the internet!! i had a palm Vx from my next door neightbot for a while and in my opinion its has a of applications you can get online but the screen is poor and the mips cpu i think is average. one thing i hate abot ppalm is always teh screen is dull to me and i had lcd screens now. so in my opinion Compaq is my choive and its a good investment to put in for long run in the future!

Do your own research on the iPaq, Handspring, and Palm devices. Each one suits different needs and you need to evaluate yourself what you're going to be using it for.

You'll convert me when the next gen comes out and is shrunk way down:p hehe, till then no way. Palm doesn't seem to have anything decent coming out in the future.. so maybe. but not now.

firehawk: you know what i didn't take into consideration... SCREEN SIZE :) heh, silly me.

but still, $500 vs $120 for the palm IIIxe on the college student negative budget... heh, i think i can pass on the movies :) Right now, i'm trying to decide which to get, the IIIxe or the visor deluxe...

One thing that has not been mentioned is that the Pilot products are flash-upgradeable to the newest OS version.

Last I heard, the Visors were not.

<shrug> Just food for thought...
