I used to have an e740. Heck, the previous owner was selling it for $150, which was incredibly good at that time (before e740 ebay auction end prices went down the tube).
The build quality was pretty pathetic. The battery didn't fit very well; you could nudge it about 2mm or so on one side because it wasn't well latched. The screen couldn't be called defective, but compared to my e755, it's not quite "whitewashed" but more "yellowwashed." And the thin piece of plastic on top cracked in two places: between the CF slot and the back of the PDA, the plastic is like under 1mm thick. Sure, there was a crack there, And the entire plastic black piece on top was starting to lift up because my finger kept pulling up on the protrusion on top.
See pic.
The big thing is that this device hard resets whenever it feels like it! Towards the end of its existence in my hands, it started hard resetting 2+ times a day. Sometimes you'd turn it on, and it would just be on the "Welcome to Pocket PC" screen! Pretty aggravating. On one hard reset, I went right onto ebay to look for the fastest ending e755 auction, and I haven't looked back.
The e740 was theoretically so good, but it didn't deliver. 400mhz chip, yet clunky and unstable performance. ATi imageon video chip, yet a cheesy screen behind it and an unsuitable d-pad/buttons for gaming. Wifi, yet short battery life, especially if the wifi was turned on. Now, the e755 is another matter. Other than not having a VGA screen, it has pretty much everything I want, and some extra features too
