PDA/Phone?

First, I'm looking around for a nice PDA/Phone. I have a budget of around $450 or less, I need to be connected to check e-mail and keep track of some things.

Second, I want it to have some sort of keypad like the Treo 650 unless you guys can reccomend one you don't feel needs a keypad. I'm willing to learn the writing style of whatever it needs as long as it's efficient after getting used to it since I'll be writing e-mails on this.

Besides that, the smaller and lighter the better. Depending on the company/product I can spend more because I get Dell EPP (Employee and Affiliate Discounts) along with discounts on all Cingular/ATT items.

Third, I'm currently with T-Mobile but it looks like I'm going to be switching since the reception quality isn't very good around here. Cingular charges $20/month for 5mb transfer which is crazy and outrageous IMO. Who else should I consider?

Right now I'm liking the Treo 650, I can get it for about $400 without any rebates.
 
where did you get the 20/month quote?
Right now, for 25/month, you get unlimited internet with cingular, which isn't a horrible deal.

i say the treo's a good choice, but you missed out on cingular's unlimted medianet plan (unlimited data for $20). i believe you can get it for $25 or 30? data-wise, tmobile is better although cingular has caught up after merging with att. but if you can't get a signal with tmobile, that's another story. check out sprint too.

If they had that running at any point I can probably get it, thanks for mentioning it! If they have it for $20/month, Cingular has sealed the deal with me.

Just check at howardforums. When I was looking into service, that forum helped me out tremendously.

I've actually been browsing there again lately looking for a PDA/phone myself. If anyone has one for sale, look in my sig!!!

I have a Treo 650 with Cingular on the $25 a month MediaNet unlimited right now.

I actually found this thread surfing the forums from my bed on my Treo 650. 😛

We have two Treo 650's(My sister and I) in the house and i thoroughly recommend it.

Cingular's edge speeds are great, my sister and i stream music to our 650's all the time over it.
 
i love the treo 650. i have it, got it for $349... it's the best. i could never go back to a standard non-PDA phone. and the screen on the treo 650 rox0rz.

Awesome, I actually want to be able to stream music on it. Is there anyway I could stream videos on this thing if I buffered it long enough? Maybe I should just get a large memory card for this. Besides streaming music, I'd like to be able to watch movies on it sometimes when I get bored and not at home, heh

i know sf has got EDGE deployed, and i'm lovin it (with my cingular 6230b and tmobile unlimited service 😀, long story). i tether on my laptop every day on the train for the morning and evening commutes. last month, used 22mb of data.

OP, unlimited medianet was taken off about a month ago. from my experience, i wouldn't bet on getting that offer from cingular. i hope you can, but them being the crooks that they are, don't count on it.

You can definitely watch movies/videos on it from an SD card. Don't know about the streaming video.

my bad. i meant unlimited medianet for $20 was changed to $25/month. that's $60 more a year, but if you use it a lot, it's worth it.

streaming audio is definitely possible with EDGE (average 100kbps, depending on your reception). i've read some folks on howardforums have their own servers at home and stream from there. on the other hand, streaming video is a bit premature, in the US anyway. i'll give it 2 years before american companies get the infrastructure up for streaming video/videocalling. it's pretty prevalent in hk/japan/korea/singapore.
 
Treo 650 is top notch... unless you don't like PalmOS.

I wish VZW picked up support for it already...
 
Get the treo 650 for sure. Last time I checked the wirefly thread over in HD had the 650 for $300 with no rebates w/new act. Treocentral has it for $320 iirc

edit: ya, you can get it from wirefly for $300, no rebates, with new act.
