pc won't power up

Hmm, I suppose your the guru? I didn't see where he gets an error code at all for the GPU or anything else. Perhaps you have the solution? You think the cpu? Please tell us "why the hell" things arn't working correctly.

Doesn't take a "guru" to read all of the posts. Although now I see that your first post came right before that one and then you posted much later on (after he tried the other power supply) so I can understand how you might have missed it.

Video card or not. Bad or not. Pull out the RAM and you should get a "no RAM" post code. If you don't get a "no RAM" post code, then the signal's not even getting that far. Therefore, the problem is either the power supply, motherboard or CPU. He ruled out the power supply. Problems either the motherboard or CPU.

That said, he DID get a post code without the CPU, but not with the CPU, which also points to the motherboard or CPU as the source of the problem. If the video card was "bad" and installed and was shorting out the whole board (let's just say for worst case scenario sake,) then it wouldn't change what post code he would get for taking the CPU in and out of the socket.

When you troubleshoot a no-post situation, you always start with motherboard and CPU, outside of the case, hooked up to a power supply. Nothing else. THEN you look for post codes and not until you get post codes do you proceed beyond that point. No video card. No drives.

Common misconception. You wouldn't believe how many people I've had return perfectly good video cards because they got "no video" not realizing that video output is something that is the end result of EVERYTHING ELSE working perfectly.

my board caught on fire when i put my ram in a different slot. i tried it again later, and everything turned on except the heatsink. i plugged the heatsink where u would normally plug in the chassis fan and it ran. this is my second rma, but this time i dunno how things will go... my first board was a dead board. i dont have many options at the moment.

I've been through this countless times. "But I get 'NO VIDEO SIGNAL' on my monitor so I replaced the monitor and the video card and it still doesn't work!" 😕

Countless. Like infinity times 20, right? I'll get three or four back from the same customer and then I'll actually call THEM UP for tech support just to ask them WTF.... only to find out that they NOT ONCE tried to post the machine without video card just to see if they got a beep code! :| :| :| (or in the case of a board like this Asus; a "voice alert.")
 
Easy guys, I called that small shop I mentioned and he is going to test it for $20 bucks and I would know the result by tomorrow
 
Sure thing NightTrain........this shop got a couple of 0503 3000+ retail at $199, could get it online for $50 less, is it worth that much to get a sure '05 winnie? I hear the '05 are much better OC's, opinion any1?
 
See if they can work out testing the NEW Winnie in your board for free if you buy the CPU. I know if I were working the shop, I'd do that. Also, DON'T BRING THEM THE WHOLE PC. Nothing pisses a bench tech off more. Bring in the board and the CPU. When we used to have folks bring in parts that they assembled and ask if we could bench test, the first thing we'd do is hand them a screwdriver to take it all back apart. 😉
 
Ok, just got the board back from the shop and both the MOBO/CPU are dead, I asked the tech guy how I managed to do such a thing and he said that it could have been the mobo itself that done in the cpu or the other way around.... I suspect it could have been the first time I attempted to power up with the 20 pin psu and I had the sockets on the wrong way.......well I hope there wil be no probles RMA'ing them both bcause I have not returned things like these before, anyways much mahalo's for all the help guys
 
I just want to know how you managed to plug it in wrong. Also make sure that the arrow on the cpu is aligned with the arrow on the socket.
 
That's a puzzle to me too, as the shape of each square that goes around each pin is different then the next. But then again, we had someone here at AT that plugged a modular cable into an OCZ Modstream UPSIDE DOWN, so I guess if you force it, anything is possible.

The only mistake I can recall on the 20 pin is that as u face the mobo and the pins are at your right, with the 20 pin the four empty pins were suppose to be on the bottom whereas I had the empty pins on the top the first time I attempted to power up and thats the only error I think I made and as far as the cpu goes I always make sure to double check the arrows before I place that little stick down to hold it in place and besides if it is placed wrong the cpu will not sit right because of the empty pins on the socket and the cpu
 
Hello folks, called asus and got the rma process going. Also called AMD and the cpu is under warranty, they do not have the 3200+ in stock and I was offered the 3500 130nm instead and took their offer. Is that a good thing?
 
I think I got too cocky when my first two builds and overclock them both succesfuly, thats when I overlooked something. I did not read enough about powering the SLI boards and the necessary psu requirements. Yap, lucky bastard.
 
For what it's worth... there is a good article in CPU (computer power user) April 2005 edition on SLI mobos. The 3 systems tested all use 600W PSU's. I found another article that showed no booting of SLI boards until you get up to a 510w PSU at least.
 
Thanks for the tip and will check it out. CPU replacement is shipped and on its way, have not heard from Asus about the board though. I commend AMD for a fast responsed.
 
Well folks just received the cpu replacement from AMD, sent the dead one on tuesday and got the new one on friday! Is that fast or is that fast!!!
 
ok im the one that had to rma x2. well i got my board this morning and tested it to see if it would post. it did! OMFGWTFBBQ! anyways im busy with school this week so ill update over teh weekend xP im satisfied that asus cross shipped me my 3rd board. will buy asus products again~!
 
Oooops...Anyway, I have not heard or received an email from Asus about the RMA. So, I went ahead and purchased the DFI SLI-DR from ZZFly and should be here in 3-4 days, also bought a new psu, the NeoPower. So as soon as I get the whole system together I'll let you know.
