My system is back up and running, but it's still starting back up on it's own after i shut it down.

I posted on other threads/forums but no one has a answer or suggestions don't fix it.

I checked the microsoft site and emailed them ,nada!

The only way i can shut it down is thru the button on the case,will this harm my pc by shutting it down this way?


I fdsk/format and trouble still happening.
I didn't install any virus/firewall this time and still rebooting on it's own.
There's nothing on this PC but the essentials..no win dvd no cd player nothing!

well it has nothing to do with windows considering that windows only loads once your computer lets it. the entity that has control over your computer before that is the bios, that is where you want to look. there is a setting in many bios' to boot at a certain time. does it always boot at a certain time of the day? turn off wake on lan and wake on ring. if your bios isnt any help, try clearing your cmos by taking the battery out and let it sit unplugged overnight.

I too had a problem with my machine starting on its own. I agree with BingBongWongFooey, the bios is probably to blame. In addition to the wake on LAN, check if it is set up to boot when there is any PCI activity. My problem occured when the activity on network I was on would boot the computer. (I don't even have WOL on my computer.)

It doesn't boot up on it's on, only after i shut it down then it starts right up again.(weird)

I'm afraid it could ruin my PC : <

As for looking in the bios, i went looking but don't know what to look for( afraid to hit wrong thing), any suggestions , step by step? Pleaseeee

The first time this happen ( starting up after shutdown) Micron told me to flash the bios (about 6 months ago) and that fix it( i bought this from MICRON pc)

It started happening again about 5 days ago so i went to the Micron site and i noticed they had a new bios (so i flashed it again) but it didn't fix it this time : <


Micron won't help me, they said it's a software problem ( they helped before because PC wasn't paid for yet, now that i paid for it they left me in the dust) I only have hardware support now.

I'm lost : <

Ok, this may sound bit silly...but..first things first.
You did opt for shuting it down, and not for restart, right?
 
It started happening again about 5 days ago so i went to the Micron site and i noticed they had a new bios (so i flashed it again) but it didn't fix it this time

Have you installed any new software/hardware in the last 5 days that could be the source? How about doing a virus scan? I had a soundcard (yamaha chip deal) that did the exact same thing after installing it. Pulled it out and problem was gone.

In the BIOS, look for anything that says "Wake on Lan activity", "Wake on Ring", "Wake on PCI activity", etc. and select "disabled". Once done, Save changes and exit. Good luck, let us know how it goes.
 
Hi again

No new programs, i clean everything out (fdsk/format) bare essentials running only.

No virus/firewall, nada.

I'll have to take a look at the bios in the morning, too tired now ,i might mess up.

What version is your motherboard?
What Bios version were you running before you flashed the chip?
What Bios version did you flash?
What utility are you using to "install" the Bios as you said you did.

Dont worry about messing things up, you're right to be cautious, but it is possible to be a bit too cautious. When you come to exit the BIOS, there are usually two options:

1. Exit saving changes
2. Exit discarding changes

If you think you've accidentally changed something you shouldnt have done, then just select Exit Discarding changes.
 
Have taken everything out of the computer and tried just the video card, ram and cpu? I had an AMD system that would not shut down with the NIC installed.

I second the bare-bones approach =)
 
I would venture to say you have a legacy USB device (maybe a keyboard?) and do not have legacy USB support turned on in the bios.

The most recent Bios should work fine as long as you have the right model MB.
For instance...you have the GA-7DX right?

Your computer may reboot for no apparent reason, and without any prior warning.

This is the default behavior when Windows XP encounters a System failure. This behavior can be changed by going to the System applet in Control Panel, select the Advanced tab and click the Settings button under the Startup and Recovery heading. Under System failure, un-check Automatically restart.


To check why your system had a failure, check the Event logs for any error messages. You can find the Event Viewer in the Administrative Tools, or by typing eventvwr in the Open box from the Run command.

In the advanced settings for Bios i see that ..."Numlock-boot up "is "ON"..could this be doing it? (please tell me yes)

If not, maybe i'm installing the driver's in the wrong order, what should i install first, second and so on?

Install a different OS. If problem is there, look in the BIOS as suggested.

Could it be a broken power switch?

Does this happen when you load the OS? How often?

And no its not NumLock.
 
win98se started doing that to me, just prior to me installing win2k. well, that fixed it. other than that, i dont know what to tell you. good luck 🙂
 
One of my computers has the same problem, our house got kinda hit by lightening and it fried a couple modems but everything else was ok except for our Emachines computer. The power supply sounded different and to turn it off you either had to unplug it or hold the power button for a while. For the techies out there, could Bluerain's problem be a bad power supply? Would it be worth swapping it out and trying a different one? just an idea, hope it helps

Before you get too crazy try the following-

1. Install clean- no drivers execpt the native drivers that install from the Millennium CD. Once you have Milly installed then try the shutdown. If the system reboots then you will have to start removing Hardware (I'll talk about that next - See Hardware).

2. If the system does shut down thenn install the drivers one at a time. I would install the Via IDE drivers and any AGP or GART drivers that AMD recommends. You will need to look through the CD and the manual closely to find out what Giga-byte recommends. After each driver install reboot the system and after the reboot verify that the system will shutdown. If you get all the drivers loaded and you still have the shutdown then I would recommend making a backup (ghost image or such) and then visit the MS update site. Again here you will need to go one update at a time and then reboot and check the shutdown. The reboot is important because if you install and shutdown you may get a false sense of security and get lose the root cause. If you get all the update then again image the system and start on the software. Keep going until you find the culprit and then you can roll the image back and not install the problem maker.


Hardware-
If you cannot shutdown with a clean install start removing the hardware. I would start with the NIC as that is the most likely to cause the problem. I have found that the best way to ensure that the hardware is gone it to uninstall it in the Device Mangler and then shutdown and remove the HW. If you have to pull the power I would not be really concerned ( as it is a clean install and you probably will not corrupt the drive). If you pull everything execpt the bare essentials and you still have the problem then I would start to look to the BIOs or the Power Supply as previously stated...

First i want to say thankyou to all who took the time to respond, THANKS A MILLION TIMES!

Poking around in the Bios was the first time for me, but with help from each and everyone of you i did it!( scary the first time)

I flashed the Bios first this time ,before anything else .

Then i went into the "power management" and disable one thing at a time, well it turned out to be the ...

"PME" Can someone tell me what "PME" stands for?

I thought i disabled this before,maybe i forgot to save and exit it *slaps myself* LOL

I am wondering what NIC you are using? Does it support WOL with no adapter cable? Glad that you found the switch in the BIOS.

I am going to guess that your motherboard manufacteurer is not consistent with their BIOS if you had the problem then it went away am come back with a new Flash
