Panther,

"PME= Power Management Event" OK, But what event was causing it?(hope it's not a silly question)

I'll check out that link you provided.

"I am wondering what NIC you are using?" I'm using SMC 1211TX -50

" Does it support WOL with no adapter cable?" IT supports WAL ,but to tell you the truth i don't know about the adapter cable(i'm learning)

" Glad that you found the switch in the BIOS." ME TOO!

"I am going to guess that your motherboard manufacteurer is not consistent with their BIOS if you had the problem then it went away am come back with a new Flash "

Yes, i was thinking the same thing. It went away(reboot) the last time i flashed and with the new version it didn't work.go figure.

Thanks again so very very much : >>

Panther,

In the bios i have one setup for LAN and other for PME.

I left the LAN on being that wasn't causing the problem.

Anyway ,thanks agian :>>

Hello i actually know the problem you speak
of since i work for a major computer call
centre and get this issue sometimes.

Its actually being caused by
a invalid/not properly loaded device driver
or incompatable software

this behaviour only happens in windows 2000
and windows xp, as there is a option that
allows you to select reboot on system error.

In Xp if you goto system properties, advanced
tab, startup and recovery you should see a option that allows you restart computer on system
failure, and this applies to device drivers
as well not just a blue screen of death.

If you look in device manager or
event viewer of w2k/xp you should
see what is actually causing this.

If this doesn't help you it is also known
that some us robotics modems external, and internal
that the software/hardware isn't compatable
and that should also be checked.

One other device that is known to cause
this is the palm pilot attached to a serial port
i dont know if you have one, but if you do
unattach it and it probably wont restart anymore.

And a old issue with all versions of windows
is a corrupt sound file on exit will somtimes
cause windows to restart.

And the final reason as of late is the roxio/adaptec
easy cd creator is incompatable with xp all except
the most recent versions with xp, will cause
system to reboot..

So try all of these as im sure one of them
will be the answer..

Daejin.

Daejin.

If you are going to make a comment you need to make sure that you read the whole thread. Blue Rain is having a problem with Windows ME not XP or W2K. Additionally since a change in the BIOS alters the results it will generally not be due to a Device Driver issue.

Blue-

What cards do you have in the system? I am interested in additional adapters (NICs, Modems, Soundcards). My suggestion would be to unplug the NIC and see if the system will shutdown. If not the remove the NIC and check again.

I looked at the SMC Datasheet - you may need to look at the properties of the NIC in Device Manager. Under the properties there should be a check box that say to allow the card to remotely wake up the system. Looking at the datasheet "Remote LAN Wakeup" is one of the features. I think what you are seeing as a PME is a packet that the NIC thinks is the magic packet to wake up.

Thats probably the problem and she may never use PME settings so to disable would be fine.
Although if she intends on using them an answer to your question would be helpful i'm sure.

(just trying to be helpful)

I had a problem like this on my system, and it was a Wake On Lan bug. Whenever the NIC saw any network activity, it would turn itself on. The weird thing was that I had WOL disabled, and that I didn't have the cable plugged in. Anyway, a BIOS update fixed my problem.

Hi again,

Something weird..

Windows update site, i downloaded driver for Accton EN1207D series (recommeded by microsoft site) after i downloaded it and installed it i said to myself "wait, i don't have this"

I have the SMC that i mentioned before.

What happen? Why would "microsoft update" see this in my pc when i don't have it?

Now i have to uninstall it, does this happen often at the update site?

I looked and now it shows the Accton not the SMC ,but the funny thing is everything works just fine, what's going on?

Thanks again: >

Could be 2 things-

#1 SMC buys their cards from Acton and rebrands them

#2 Acton is a second source supplier for SMC and markets the card under the Acton name also(if it were this then they also logo a driver)

Either instance I would not be worried unless if causes network issues..

You know? I get a similar thing with my Soyo dragon board. I have it on a surge protector, and When I power the master on the surge, it starts the computer. Even if the power was off b4 the master on the surge was turned off. I have dinked around with the BIOS and set "State After Power Failure" to Off. Any ideas?

aka1nas,

When i was trouble shooting my problem with the help of the wonderful member's here and other forums, someone suggested to remove any power surge protector(it didn't work for me)but i'm sure this will solve your problem.

Some how the PSP is starting it up. Plug it directly into wall socket if it bother's you.

As for it harming your system i ( starting up via PSP) wouldn't know about that , i'm a newbie and learning : >

PS: I never shut off my PSP, why would you do that anyway, i'm curious. Is it OK to leave the PSP on at all times like i do?
