EDIT: summary...
1. It will charge when connected via USB.
2. The "new hardware plugged in" beep occurs when I plug it in.
3. It displays "Do Not Disconnect." when connected.
4. iTunes does not recognize it.
5. It does not appear in Windows Explorer.
6. It does appear in Disk Management, but if I try to assign it a drive letter, it still doesn't appear in windows explorer.
7. It will appear in the choices for ephiPod, but when it tries to "create iPod directories" it fails at writing.
8. The iPod updater doesn't recognize it, and if I plug it in while the updater is launched, the updater freezes for about 5 minutes, then displays "Can't mount iPod." I checked and that's usually associated with a drive leter conflict, but I changed all my drive letters to prevent a conflict and still have the same result.
9. When I tried it in a friend's machine, I got a bubble saying "iPod found" but 20 seconds later it said "installation of drivers failed, might not work properly."
10. It appears in the device manager, but if I try to "update driver" or uninstall it, it doesn't help.

So, I broke down and opened the package. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, my computer isn't recognizing it properly. When I plug it in the iPod displays "do not remove" I hear the beeps of "new deviced sensed," but it doesn't add it as a drive. I installed iTunes thinking there might be drivers in the program, but no dice. I would think it's an iPod problem, but I also have a flash drive that for some reason won't recognize on my machine (but will on others). Could there be something corrupt with the USB drivers? I tried reinstalling them from the ABIT website, but it hasn't made a difference... Come to think of it, the flash drive hasn't worked on this machine since I built it/reformatted.

Would appreciate the help.

Hello. I got a free 30GB black iPod video at the beginning of the semester for being enrolled in a course that needs it at school. I've kept it in the box with the intention of selling it at the end of the semester (they can ask us to present it, then charge us if we don't have it during the semester). They were selling for close to $300 on Ebay back then, so I figured it wasn't worth it, since I have a fully functional iRiver H140.
Well, it looks like I can only get about $240 for the player now on Ebay, and it would still be another 2 months before I could sell it. Additionally, I'm going to have to commute via train during the summer, at which point the video capacity of the iPod seems like it would be worth it. That said, there's nothing wrong with my H140, the iPod would just be an upgrade over it. The negatives are that I don't really like being constricted by iTunes, I'm a bit anti-Apple just because of the MP3 player=iPod culture, I'd be giving up the $200+ I could get for it, and I'd have to buy accessories (case, belt clip, etc.). Obviously it's smaller and has video, plus I wouldn't have to upgrade in a year, like I'll have to with my H140.

(2) is the iPod video the best for my video needs at this price range? I'm looking to watch my XviD TV eps and stuff I've ripped from my DVD collection, but I'm not sure if the advertised converters to the iPod format work (plus, they cost money). Has anyone used one?
Thanks.
