PC Not Recognizing new iPod

EDIT: summary...

1. It will charge when connected via USB.
2. The "new hardware plugged in" beep occurs when I plug it in.
3. It displays "Do Not Disconnect." when connected.
4. iTunes does not recognize it.
5. It does not appear in Windows Explorer.
6. It does appear in Disk Management, but if I try to assign it a drive letter, it still doesn't appear in windows explorer.
7. It will appear in the choices for ephiPod, but when it tries to "create iPod directories" it fails at writing.
8. The iPod updater doesn't recognize it, and if I plug it in while the updater is launched, the updater freezes for about 5 minutes, then displays "Can't mount iPod." I checked and that's usually associated with a drive leter conflict, but I changed all my drive letters to prevent a conflict and still have the same result.
9. When I tried it in a friend's machine, I got a bubble saying "iPod found" but 20 seconds later it said "installation of drivers failed, might not work properly."
10. It appears in the device manager, but if I try to "update driver" or uninstall it, it doesn't help.

_______________-
So, I broke down and opened the package. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, my computer isn't recognizing it properly. When I plug it in the iPod displays "do not remove" I hear the beeps of "new deviced sensed," but it doesn't add it as a drive. I installed iTunes thinking there might be drivers in the program, but no dice. I would think it's an iPod problem, but I also have a flash drive that for some reason won't recognize on my machine (but will on others). Could there be something corrupt with the USB drivers? I tried reinstalling them from the ABIT website, but it hasn't made a difference... Come to think of it, the flash drive hasn't worked on this machine since I built it/reformatted.

ABIT NF7-S v2.0
XP 2400+
1GB PC3200

Would appreciate the help.

----------------

Hello. I got a free 30GB black iPod video at the beginning of the semester for being enrolled in a course that needs it at school. I've kept it in the box with the intention of selling it at the end of the semester (they can ask us to present it, then charge us if we don't have it during the semester). They were selling for close to $300 on Ebay back then, so I figured it wasn't worth it, since I have a fully functional iRiver H140.

Well, it looks like I can only get about $240 for the player now on Ebay, and it would still be another 2 months before I could sell it. Additionally, I'm going to have to commute via train during the summer, at which point the video capacity of the iPod seems like it would be worth it. That said, there's nothing wrong with my H140, the iPod would just be an upgrade over it. The negatives are that I don't really like being constricted by iTunes, I'm a bit anti-Apple just because of the MP3 player=iPod culture, I'd be giving up the $200+ I could get for it, and I'd have to buy accessories (case, belt clip, etc.). Obviously it's smaller and has video, plus I wouldn't have to upgrade in a year, like I'll have to with my H140.

Just
(1) looking for thoughts
(2) is the iPod video the best for my video needs at this price range? I'm looking to watch my XviD TV eps and stuff I've ripped from my DVD collection, but I'm not sure if the advertised converters to the iPod format work (plus, they cost money). Has anyone used one?

Thanks.

my brother just got this. He had to update the firmware on the ipod, and now it is problem free. Screen size is a little small to watch a movie on, but if it floats your boat, ...

The firmware adds xvid support? Somehow I doubt it... I actually remember reading something about a firmware upgrade purposefully making non-iTunes-store-downloaded-videos not play properly...

You can use Avisynth/x264 MeGui(or any x264 gui) to easily convert you movies to MP4. I know that Nero 7 have profiles setup for video Ipods

The .1 firmware upgrade made non-iTunes videos freeze up requiring you to skip back 5 seconds and wait for it to re-sync. After dealing with this for a week or so, I downgraded the firmware and life is good again. Although, I am getting a bit tired of iTunes telling me to upgrade every time I plug it in.

There are so many great video podcasts that it makes my daily 1 hour commute a breeze. Using TVHarmony I can easily xfer from my TiVos to the iPod. TiVo is rumored to have full support for iPod with their own software sometime in the next 10 years.

They scratch easily so I got a plexiglass hardshell case for it.

I am by all means not a fan/zealot of Apple, this is actually my first Apple product but I have had the Dell MP3 player, a Rio, iRiver and the original Creative audio/video travesty. The 5G beats them all in my opinion.

I have yet to actually purchase any music or TV Shows from iTunes but I will admit to buying the Fatboy Slim Chris Walken video :)

Videora Ipod Converter FTW (the free one, not the one you have to pay for... Just google it)...

Ehh, there are still a few quirks about the ipod video. Such as itunes, they have a selection for TV shows, but in the ipod video, no TV show category... If I could have a zen vision m for my ipod, I'd trade it. Still scratches easily like usual too... Battery life is the sux0rs as well... Max I can get is like 1.25 to 1.5 hours before the battery drains itself...

You must always use a constant bitrate over a variable one, unless its h.264, but everybody uses mp4. Plus, sometimes xvid's sometimes may not work being transferred over, so then you have to convert it to divx, and retry again... Can be a tad anoying. Also, part of the time the audio won't sync correctly with the video, which is a problem I'm having now, which I must convert those videos into divx and reconvert.

Hmm... I went into "Computer Management" under drive management and added a drive letter for the ipod (which is recognized). However, it still does not appear in My Computer. It does appear in ephPod, but it when it tries to "create iPod directories" in it it fails to write to it. Also, iTunes still doesn't recognize it.

iPods were designed for blithering idiots. Why won't it recognize it?

Sorry that didn't help. My computer can't even see my Shuffle.

Hmm... do I have an option to NOT update if it sees it? Because upgrading to 1.1 will screw up video (as has been discussed and as I've read).

do you have another machine to test with? (since you say the flash drive is not recognized either?)

I'm thinking it is a usb issue. try another port.

it should at least get recognized as a removable drive.

It's listed under "Disk Management" but without a drive, and when I assign a drive it doesn't work.

I've tried multiple ports.

I'm reinstalling with the CD. If that doesn't work I'll try another computer (at school, so have to find someone).
