Well, the updater still doesn't recognize it, although if I plug it in while the updater is open, the updater locks up. Don't know what that might mean...

now that I remember, I've had this hap[pen on an old VIA-based machine. Crappy drivers is what did it iirc.

try it on another machine.

Tried it on a friend's, recognized it in a bubble as an iPod, but then said driver installation failed, might not work properly. Any ideas?

try the ipod updater on their pc.

Got a friend's machine to recognize it but couldn't read it until I "restored" it, then it would read it. My computer stays exactly the same, though.

You need to probably update the firmware. Also, you may need to install iPod recognition software (availble from Apple). Thats how my old 3g worked.

The updater won't recognize it, so I can't update the firmware.

I took it to a friend's machine and restoring it updated it as well.

I did already. Many times.

My experiences with this:

1. With most USB devices, you have to install the drivers first before you plug in the device. If you just plug in the device without installing the drivers first, Windows gets confused and it will never work... until you delete all the drivers and do it the right way.

2. I had the same problem with my Ipod where it wouldn't show up in Windows. The Ipod updater did see it but it thought it was 38 gigs, when it should have been 2 gigs. That turned out to be caused by Windows assigning it a drive letter which already existed, hence the conflict and the bogus drive size (the drive the iPod was conflicting with was a 40 gig drive).

I'm thinking that you should uninstall all the Apple software and then rip out all references to it in Device Manager. Mine shows up under "Disk Drives" and is called "Apple iPod USB device"

1. I think this is what happened. I said "I don't want this bloatware on my machine, I'll just plug it in."

2. I think there might have been some conflicts but I've changed my drive letters.

OK, I'll try what you suggest. I'd rather not reformat. Other suggestions would be appreciated.

I uninstalled all apple software, and there were no longer any references to it in the device manager (I see that "Apple iPod USB device" only when it's plugged in).
Rebooted, reinstalled software, rebooted, plugged in.

Same result 🙁

Hmm... I don't have Daemon tools installed (don't think I have since I reformatted) although I do have Alchohol. Don't think I've installed a Starforce game either (only Half Life 2, Civ 4, two EA Sports games).

I'll give it a try, though.

FWIW, if I add a drive letter to it, it still doesn't appear in My Computer or iTunes, but it does appear in things like Nero and ephPod, although if I try to write to it via ephPod I get "List Index Error."

Still trying... can't reformat right now (no floppies in vicinity and I need floppies for SATA drivers), so if anyone has any ideas, most likely due to the USB driver problems, I'd appreciate it.

Arrg, the topic of my post changed, so I got moved to a forum that gets one post an hour...

I really need people's help now!

assuming htat you have xp, right click on my computer, click on manage, clicl disk manager, find the ipod, and format using the FAT32 filesystem.

then reboot and try the ipod software.

Thanks for finding me over here and replying.

When I tried to format:

"The operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable the partition or volume, restart the computer."

I restarted multiple times, after assigning the IPOD a letter (the IPOD lost its drive letter after the reboot as well).

if you ever want to chat, we'll run through some troubleshooting.
