PC locking up... processor POSTing as strange frequencies?? Monitor going into suspend?

So, if you have been keeping up in the CPU/Processors and Motherboard forum, you are already up to speed, but for those who aren't...

I decided to clean my computer out last night, it was swamped with dust in every crevice. So, I took it apart... yada yada, and I wanted to re-apply AS5 to my heatsink/fan and my BFG 6800 GT's core. Then I got this bright idea to put AS5 on my northbridge heatsink. I had to use needle nose pliers to get these stupid plastic plugs off, and I ended up scraping across these tiny little wires that are imprinted into the motherboard. I figured it shouldn't be a big deal... but I go back to turn the computer on, and it is POSTing my 2.8GHz Pentium 4 as a 2.33GHz operating at 1.8GHz. I found that rather profound... and then I shut it off for a while, turned it back on, and it was recognized as my 2.8GHz processor! Problem solved, right? Nope...

Now, I decide, well I want to play some CS: Source and see how it is running. It ran percfect. Played for maybe 45 mintues, then I turned off source and started chatting on MSN and then the computer locked up. I had to shut it off from the power switch. I turned it back on, got into Windows, then it locked up again. So, I shut it off and I started watching the temperatures on the core of the Prescott, and it was running about 54C, a little higher than I have seen it... and then while I was in the BIOS, the monitor shut off. The computer was on, but the monitor went into suspend.

Any insight into this matter? I need any and all help I can get here, please help me! I will keep updating the OP until the matter is resolved... thank you.

Motherboard: ABIT SG-80
Processor: 2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 Socket T (LGA 775)
Power Supply: Aspire 420W PSU that comes with Aspire XQPack
RAM: 1GB TwinMOS RAM
Video Card: BFG 6800 GT OC
Hard Drives:
[*]1 x Hitatchi DeskStar 200GB
[*]1 x Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB

Update 12/30/2005 at 7:34pm:
Well, I took the case apart, removed all the arctic silver from the heatsink and fan using 99% isopropyl alcohol and then re-applied. Now the computer will not show any video from either the AGP slot or the on board video. Everything is powering up and the floppy drive light is staying solid green. It also sounds like the computer is reading from my hard drives. The keyboard is plugged in but the three green LEDs in the upper-right corner of it are NOT on. I don't have a PCI video card to try. I'm going to try to reset the CMOS and afterwards I will post an update.

Update 12/30/2005 at 7:50pm:
Cleared the CMOS to no avail.

Update 12/30/2005 at 8:09pm:
I removed the video card from the AGP slot and tried using the on board video... still no video showed up. Still no lights show up on the keyboard.

Update 12/30/2005 at 8:45pm:
After further examination of the imprinted wire that I scraped across, it seems that wire is in fact severed. I am going to try to RMA the board, but I have ordered an MSI in the mean time... any other suggestions at this point are very welcome, thank you!

Update 12/30/2005 at 9:02pm:
I just wanted to note that I tried two different monitors, both of which showed nothing. So there was no weird coincidence that both monitors happen to stop working at the exact time I needed them! :D

Update 12/30/2005 at 11:46pm:
I put in an eRMA for the ABIT board and ordered this motherboard from MSI. Yeah, I know it doesn't have dual channel RAM... but its the best I could find. Not sure what I'll do if ABIT actually honors the warranty. I guess I'll have a backup motherboard laying around :)

Sounds like the mobo is botched. Is there any visible damage to the wires? Are they connecting with eachother? Like has that one scrape connected up the three wires, or is there no connection between them?

Also, is there any POST beep codes?

try reseating your RAM or running memtest. Narrows it down abit. If not, your board is probably shot.

There are absolutely no beep codes on this board... there is the single "beep" at start but thats it.

Edit: After close examination of the board, it LOOKS like imprinted wire is severed.

I tried reseating the RAM... that did nothing. I would love to run memtest but nothing shows up on the monitor! :D

It looks like you are going to need a new motherboard, same thing happened to my friend changing his socket A, HSF, but his would not post at all.

Why wouldnt they honor the warrenty? Sure you broke it, but theyre not gonna find that one tiny little wire that is severed.

I asked my brother to try to find the wire I severed and he said he couldn't even find it. I even gave him a general location of where it's at... It is an absolutely microscopic piece of damage. Oh well :(

We'll see if they honor the warranty or not.

veggz, are you getting any beeping at all? any lights showing up on the keyboard? if not... your motherboard may in fact be botched.

Ah this modern age - integrity has dropped from the social lexicon. With consumers like this, is it any wonder that Best Buy may in fact repackage items as sell them as new?

Galvanized, yes I did read the thread. I was merely referring to the symptoms the OP was experiencing as similar to those of my system, not inferring that I had also severed a pin from my motherboard, which I thought I made clear.

Looks like a motherboard RMA may be in the near future for me :(.
(no, I am not getting any beeping at all.. so does that mean probably MB?)

yes, you should probably RMA it...sounds like a mobo issue.
