So, if you have been keeping up in the CPU/Processors and Motherboard forum, you are already up to speed, but for those who aren't...
I decided to clean my computer out last night, it was swamped with dust in every crevice. So, I took it apart... yada yada, and I wanted to re-apply AS5 to my heatsink/fan and my BFG 6800 GT's core. Then I got this bright idea to put AS5 on my northbridge heatsink. I had to use needle nose pliers to get these stupid plastic plugs off, and I ended up scraping across these tiny little wires that are imprinted into the motherboard. I figured it shouldn't be a big deal... but I go back to turn the computer on, and it is POSTing my 2.8GHz Pentium 4 as a 2.33GHz operating at 1.8GHz. I found that rather profound... and then I shut it off for a while, turned it back on, and it was recognized as my 2.8GHz processor! Problem solved, right? Nope...
Now, I decide, well I want to play some CS: Source and see how it is running. It ran percfect. Played for maybe 45 mintues, then I turned off source and started chatting on MSN and then the computer locked up. I had to shut it off from the power switch. I turned it back on, got into Windows, then it locked up again. So, I shut it off and I started watching the temperatures on the core of the Prescott, and it was running about 54C, a little higher than I have seen it... and then while I was in the BIOS, the monitor shut off. The computer was on, but the monitor went into suspend.
Any insight into this matter? I need any and all help I can get here, please help me! I will keep updating the OP until the matter is resolved... thank you.
Motherboard: ABIT SG-80
Processor: 2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 Socket T (LGA 775)
Power Supply: Aspire 420W PSU that comes with Aspire XQPack
RAM: 1GB TwinMOS RAM
Video Card: BFG 6800 GT OC
Hard Drives:
[*]1 x Hitatchi DeskStar 200GB
[*]1 x Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB
Update 12/30/2005 at 7:34pm:
Well, I took the case apart, removed all the arctic silver from the heatsink and fan using 99% isopropyl alcohol and then re-applied. Now the computer will not show any video from either the AGP slot or the on board video. Everything is powering up and the floppy drive light is staying solid green. It also sounds like the computer is reading from my hard drives. The keyboard is plugged in but the three green LEDs in the upper-right corner of it are NOT on. I don't have a PCI video card to try. I'm going to try to reset the CMOS and afterwards I will post an update.
Update 12/30/2005 at 7:50pm:
Cleared the CMOS to no avail.
Update 12/30/2005 at 8:09pm:
I removed the video card from the AGP slot and tried using the on board video... still no video showed up. Still no lights show up on the keyboard.
Update 12/30/2005 at 8:45pm:
After further examination of the imprinted wire that I scraped across, it seems that wire is in fact severed. I am going to try to RMA the board, but I have ordered an MSI in the mean time... any other suggestions at this point are very welcome, thank you!
Update 12/30/2005 at 9:02pm:
I just wanted to note that I tried two different monitors, both of which showed nothing. So there was no weird coincidence that both monitors happen to stop working at the exact time I needed them!
Update 12/30/2005 at 11:46pm:
I put in an eRMA for the ABIT board and ordered this motherboard from MSI. Yeah, I know it doesn't have dual channel RAM... but its the best I could find. Not sure what I'll do if ABIT actually honors the warranty. I guess I'll have a backup motherboard laying around
