PC games to use DVD's?

If all the consoles run on DVD's, does that mean that computer games will shift from CD to DVD soon too? Do they compress the games you currently buy? Or are the xbox's games not using more than 1 gig of their space?

Future games might use DVD whne it becomes more standard.

I don't know why anybody uses CD-Rom as a DVD-Rom is not that much more.

But future games are going to need a lot of space for the graphics.

Huh? I didn't get what you wrote. Anyways, why don't they use these DVD's for games for the pc's now, aren't they requiring it? doom 3 can't possibly use up a measly 800 mb, it needs more :D:D

I thought they were going to start releasing games on DVD years ago... never happened. I still have that 6x Creative DVD drive too... probably should get something faster for CDs though... especially since EA insists on BF1942 having CD Checks enabled 100x per gaming session.

The game files are all compressed on the cd's anyway so it doesn't matter too much unless they have a lot of data on it. Like that MS Flight simulator. IT comes on a couple of cd's!

consoles wouldn't do that as they'd have to uncompress even more then they already do at the moment and that would take too much power to do. With the pc you uncompress once at install and then don't uncompress again when gaming.

I think your a little confused over what mutilator was saying. He meant that BF1942 authenticates the cd 100 times each time you play, not that the drive speed is 100x.

I have Zork: Grand Inquisitor and Riven both on DVD. A few games did have DVD releases. Riven is MUCH MUCH better when you don't have to swap disks every 2 minutes.

I think Bioware release a special version of the Baldurs Gates games on DVD. Never did see them in stores, but those would have been great to use instead of having to keep 6 disks on hand.

They're nearly 3 times the cost of the CD-ROM.

Personally, on a PC, I think they're currently a waste.

IIRC Riven was released on DVD, but that's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

EDIT: Seems I was a little slow in responding.

Where do you get 3 times as much??? try about .5 times as much on average.

Go to pricewatch. 16X DVD - $33, while a 52X CD-Rom = $22

Well, for the brands I'd buy, Lite-on, Pioneer, Newegg has them around $42. So they are only twice as much.

Konami is trying to decide how they want to release MGS2: Substance for the PC. I read an article that said it'll either have to be on 2 DVDs or 10 CDs !!!!!!!!!!

Thats insane

There were other DVD games. I had Wing Commander 3, Claw and Baldur's Gate. WC3 was great since they actually substituted in DVD quality cutscenes, Claw sucked ass DVD or not, and Baldur's Gate was just the 5 discs on 1 DVD.

PC games are written to the lowest common denominator. Since most people dont get DVD-roms with their computers, they dont make games on DVD. Of course a lot of people would buy one when it eventually became necessary, but consumers are as unlikely to make that jump as publishers are. There is something about the PC gaming arena that totally stifles innovation, but unfortunately, game publishers refuse to band together to do something about it. PC gaming is getting stale, quick.

I was in software etc the other day and some old man was looking for a game that would torture his video card. He looked around at quake 1, said hmm, requires pentium 90, I think I only have a pentium 24... I stopped short of handing him UT2003 even though it was sitting in plain view. The very people that game companies are trying to appease are the very people who wouldnt know a megabyte from their asshole. All they need is to collaborate and come up with a big fat logo to stuff onto PC games that require power. Following DirectX generations should be fine, but it should be more all encompassing, including CPU and other hardware requirements.

But will that ever happen? Nah.

When CD drives are rare (plain CD drives, not DVD and CD drives) they'll probably make the transition. I expect it'll bein gto pick up speed soon anyway. Outcast was available on DVD as well iirc.
If a game comes on 4/5 CD's or 1 DVD, the single DVD would probably be cheaper to do, and you wouldn't need to add bits to the setup program to tell oyu to swap disks, same as actually in the game.

And here I though you were talking about the MEDIA and that the MEDIA costs 3 times as much...

Which is true and can be a contributing factor.

POD? That wasn't on DVD was it? I know it was the first game to use MMX, but I didn't know it was the first game on DVD.

the pc as a gaming platform in general is becoming less and less desirable imo :(
