Hmmm, I played KOTOR like 4 times and I don't remember that bug either. Of course I think I ran with V-sync on all the time. I know the first time I played the retail version it would crash all the time, so I reinstalled it and it worked fine after that.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up. I will try that tonight

tried it with v-sync on, still gets stuck after battle, the game doesn't crash after the first video once I get on the escape pod. It's weird though, when I start the game the screen goes black and I can hear music. I have to go to task manager with CTRL+ALT+DEL and bring up the game for it to show up.

Meanwhile I'm getting sucked in with Dragon Age so far!

Well, I beat DA:Origins, really enjoyed it. One thing I regret is buying the cheaper version. I see that Steam does not have an add on pack for the other expansions, should have purchased the Ultimate Edition.

I'm going to give KOTOR another shot, see if I can live with the bugs

I know it may not be as good for some, but honestly, when it comes to the dialog system and how things work with other characters in the game, I could recommend Alpha Protocol.

you can, but please don't. its horribad.

I actually enjoyed it and beat it. I've played some shitty games, it's not one of them. Seriously, the dialog and character system is actually pretty damn good. The combat, AI and movement are something to be desired though.

Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age: Origins, definitely, also Beyond Good and Evil, but that's even older (although still fantastic, in my opinion).

Bioshock? Really??

I think now we're just naming off good, semi story-driven games.

Bioshock isn't actually that different from ME2; they have about the same amount of "RPG elements" (a few powers you can use and a meaningless "morality system" based on arbitrary choices you make a few times throughout the game).

Will I enjoy KOTOR even if i'm not a huge SW fan ?

Yes. I'm not a huge fan of Star Wars and thought KOTOR was awesome. In many ways I thought Mass Effect felt like an updated KOTOR when I was playing through. Great games, both of them.

Deus Ex is awesome too, but I don't think it's as similar to ME as KOTOR is.

I agree. I played Alpha Protocol through three times in a single week. No game has made me do that before.

Both Dragon Age and more recently Dragon Age 2 draw heavily from Mass Effect for their story-telling elements. DA2 especially with the fully voiced main character.

You might also enjoy Resident Evil 5 or Assassins Creed 2. Both are 3rd person games with plenty of action, AC2 has a strong story while RE5 has a fantastic levelling up system (weapons...etc.).

I beat RE5 onn 360 when it first came out...I don't even remember the level up system!

you bastards! it was because of this and similar threads that I recently re-isntalled KotOR and am now churning my way through this. amazing that I keep playing after:

--3rd play through
--buggiest, most frustrating POS game I've ever played
--boring, laughably flat textures and models

but despite all of that, this is still one of the best games ever, and easily Bioware's best.

So, Carth in KotOR = Kaiden in ME, amirite?

KOTOR was great at the time but it hasn't aged well. The inventory system is very clunky and it doesn't seem to support widescreen monitors properly. Also the first 2 - 3 hours of the game are pretty boring until you get into the real story.

I beg to differ.

The first few hours of KotOR are fine. I thought exploring Taris, and Taris itself, was great.

KotOR II, on the other hand, had one of the WORST opening areas in an RPG, hands-down. Just dreadful.
Had I not been such a huge fan of the first game when the sequel came out, I may never have forced myself to play past the first few hours on Peragus.

KOTOR is the most surprising game I've ever played.

I actually hate star wars. Stupid universe. However the game got such amazing praise that I had to try. The first 30 minutes or so are tedious, but damn the game picks up and becomes an all time great imo. On the same level as Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate 2, and Planescape Torment. The game also has a brilliant twist that I never saw coming.
