PC dead?

Hi,

So I have been nursing my build from late 2001 along.

In an effort to delay the inevitable, I decided to add some more RAM to help thing move along a little better with some newer games.

Anyway, I pulled the RAM fromt he system to check to see what type I had before. When putting it back in, I missed the RAM slot and gently touched the mobo with the RAM.

So I get the RAM back in and hit the power button, and nothing. So I check backinside, and I notice the RAM isn't clipped in all the way on the bootom. I rectify this and still nothing. :(

Tomrrow, I am planning on pulling it apart and cleaning everything, then putting it back together as there was a ton of dust in there.

Any ideas of what has transpired here?

I know that I am overdue for a new rig. However, as I am spenidng more and more time at work, I use my home PC less and less frequently and would prefer to get another year or so out of this one.

Thanks a lot!

Might just be some dust got into the slot.

BUT, can you explain 'nothing'.
Any LED on mobo, and tiny fan spin up? ANY action at all?

Hah, no I really mean absolutely nothing. No leds, no fans, no sounds. Nothing stirring.

Don't want to sound silly, but is there a switch on the back of the power supply near where you plug it in, is it set to '1'?
Got to start with the easy stuff - not much point in tearing the case apart then finding that the switches on the plug socket were off.

If all plugged in correctly,
are you sure you didn't disconnect a cable that might have been in the way?

Hmm, I'm not home at the moment. However, I didn't touch a thing while I was in there.

I did have to move a cable but I double checked it and it is secure. Hmm, I guess, I should go over all the wires, etc with a fine toothcomb first and clean her out while I'm at it before I jump on here.

Why don't I do that first as soon as I get home, like in 3 hours. Then I'll post back here with my findings, or lack thereof.

When you pulled the RAM did you actually turn off the computer? ie completely unplugged?

See, I had always heard that it was advised to leave the PSU plugged into the wall, but off. That way there is still a ground line.

The reason I asked was it sounded like he had left the switch "on" from a previous post. I know it's something obvious, but when it comes down to it you have to ask yourself all the what ifs.

Have you tried clearing CMOS?

It's ALIVE!!!!

Thanks for all the help. I double checked all the connections and did a serious cleaning of everything hoping that it might be dust shorting comething.

I plugged it in and voila.

I'm a happy Bonger today. :)

Gonna go find some RAM and a DVD ROM now and upgrade my old friend.
