PC build advice

dabuddha

Lifer
Well I decided I'm going to sell my gaming laptop and go back to using a desktop (the appeal of dual 24" monitors is too high! 😀)

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
General Use/Gaming. I mostly play WoW and SC2 beta right now but I do enjoy FPS as well.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$600 roughly

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
None really. I just want a solid PC

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
My DVD burner most likely is all I'll pull out of my old desktop.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
I have been for weeks now

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
default speeds

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.
Honestly, haven't thought about it.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Next week or so

Here's a build I put together on Newegg.

COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 RC-534-KKN2-GP Black Computer Case
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro RS-600-AMBA-D3 600W Power Supply
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive -BareDrive
XFX Radeon HD 4770 HD-477A-YDFC Video Card
Kingston HyperX T1 Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor
MSI 790XT-G45 ATX AMD Motherboard

My biggest concerns is I'm not matching up my processor and motherboard up right. Also, I'm not sure if the vid card is good enough for what I want to do with it.

TIA!

EDIT:

Now looking at:

COOLER MASTER Centurion 534
Western Digital Caviar Black 500gb
XFX HD-477A-YDFC Radeon HD 4770
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 600
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor Model
GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 AMD 790X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Total comes out to about $620 after MIR and $30 coupons

But the vid card is still underpowered?

This is what I build last month for new gaming desktop

Intel I7 930
MSI x58 PRO USB
Nvidia GTX 460
1 TB SATA
Cooler Master
6GB DDR#
everything sums up for $800

This is the best build up according to me but I decided not to purchase because processor market is very unstable, new processors coming every month. I will be buying in next couple of months.

That bundle posted above is better for what you want, but it'll mean moving to DDR3 ram.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277

Here's faster DDR3 ram for 1$ more.

I'd go for the bundle listed above, this ram, and a faster video card. There's no way you'll get playable frame rates on a 24in monitor on a 4770.

Unfortunately, video cards are typically the most expensive part :/

Wow where did you get most of your components? Using newegg, my total came up over 1100 for those parts.

1. liar. sc2 beta is not available now.
2. i didn't like the CM 534 case. felt very cheap and flimsy but i guess that's personal.
3. get at LEAST a 4870 or a 5770. esp if you're running a 24" (1920 x 1200/1080). personally, i'd stretch the budget and get a 5850.
4. i don't know anything about AMD's right now so i can't help u there.

Haha, nice try. Where did you buy a GTX 460 from? Pandora?

Are you tweakboy's brother?

1. Uhh SC2 beta has been out for awhile.

2. Hmm I don't want a flimsy case but I do want a roomy case. It'll be sitting under my desk and will never move.

3. 5770 is doable but 5850 is just out of my price range (wife would kill me)

A 5770 will be a vast improvement over the 4770. You should fit that into the budget any way that you can, even if it means dropping down to an Athlon II.

Ok done deal. Without getting into a nvdia vs ati battle, is there an Nvidia card that is equally as good or better for about the same price or less or is it virtually the same for my needs.

Bah hate picking componenets sometimes. Buddy of mine is telling me to go with the 4870 since the performance gain isn't that much with the 5770. It's about a $30 difference

If you don't care about DX11 and the added heat and noise, the 4870 is a good deal. The closest thing Nvidia has is the GTX 260, but I doubt you will be able to find a new one for a competitive price.

comes out to $727.07 - $30 coupons - $30 MIR = $667.07

Bout to hit the "my wifes gonna kill me but place the purchase button" 😀

BTW thank you all for the helpful information! It's been about 8 years since I stopped building PCs and a lot has changed so it was overwhelming with the amount of options available.

I'd love to but my wife would kill me 😀

Well long as you're still happy with your build 🙂

I hate to sound like an ass or anything it's just the "wife would kill me" bit I've seen it so much and I wish significant others would be more understanding of someone spending their own money, provided bills/priorities are well taken care of anyway.

5770 has less heat, less power consumption, DX11, and more availability as advantages over the 4870, if those are worth the cost difference to you. 5850 costs like 2x as much so I'm not sure why people are suggesting that.

I have a Gigabyte Triton, which appears to be built almost exactly like that CM case, and I definitely would not call it flimsy or cheap.

There is not a good nVidia alternative as far as similar performance in your price range.

To clarify about SC2 beta, Blizzard ended the first phase of beta testing on June 7th. The only way to play now is with cracks, and that only allows play against 3rd party bots at best. They will be opening the beta again around July 14th, and it will probably be full open beta then.

because the 4870 is a faster card than the 5770 in most cases and at a lower price point.

exactly, there's no way you're currently playing sc2 beta now against any real form of intelligence because it is down until july 27th.

I didn't say I was playing it right this minute. I did get into the beta and up until a month ago (been too busy to play) I had been playing the game.

by "right now" i assumed you meant a reasonable current time frame, such as the past couple of days.
the game has been unavailable for over a week now, unless you're playing hacked AI.
🙂

Thank you all again for the information/advice! Placed my order last night (after throwing in a Bluray burner). I'm as giddy as a school girl!

Enjoy it, that's going to be a strong system. The 4770, while older tech, is still an excellent card at 1680 resolution.
