How do I report a stolen Social Security card?

Answer
If your Social Security card has been stolen, you should apply for a replacement card, but Social Security takes no special action because it has been stolen.

See http://www.socialsecurity.gov/replace_sscard.html for details on replacing your card.

You should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by:

Internet--http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft
Telephone--1-877-IDTHEFT (438-4338)
TTY--202-326-2502

If you think someone is using your number to work, you should contact Social Security. One way to find out whether someone is using your number to work is to check your Social Security Statement. The Statement lists earnings posted to your Social Security record. If you find an error on your Statement, contact Social Security right away.

Helpful publications on SSA?s web site are:

· SSA Publication No. 05-10064, ?When Someone Misuses Your Social Security Number, at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10064.html.
· SSA Publication No. 05-10002, ?Social Security: Your Number and Card?, at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10002.html.

The Federal Trade Commission also makes available on its web site the publication: ?Identity Theft: When Bad Things Happen to Your Good Name?, at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/idtheft.htm.

What actions should I take if I think I might be a victim of identity theft?

If your SSN has been used to run up bills or obtain credit, Social Security cannot straighten out your credit record. However, we suggest you take the following steps to straighten out your personal records:

1. Check your SSA earnings record. Verify with SSA the accuracy of the reported earnings and request correction if necessary.

2. Notify the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or www.consumer.gov/idtheft. Congress has directed the FTC to establish a centralized database to receive all allegations of identity theft and to provide victims with information to help resolve problems with identity theft.

3. File a report with the local police or the police department where the identity theft took place, and keep a copy of the police report as proof of the crime.

4. Contact the fraud units of the three major credit reporting bureaus:

· Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; or Internet: http://www.equifax.com
· Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289; or Internet: http://www.transunion.com/
· Experian: 1-888-397-3742; or Internet: http://www.experian.com

You should:

· Identify yourself as an identity theft victim.
· Request that fraud alerts be placed on your credit records requiring creditors to contact you before approving new credit or making any changes to an existing account.
· Ask for copies of your credit reports. (There may be a cost.)

5. Call each creditor to report fraud for any account that has been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

I appreciate all the information you have given me guys... but this is something I fail to understand:

I have closed ALL gaps that was possible. Her bank and credit is closed and being reissued. She used her COLLEGE address which is not tied to her social. The only thing they is her full name and her social security. What can you possibly do with those two information and nothing else to go on? I don't see it as a high threat as long as we took care of the other parts.

A SS# is always a risk if someone else knows it, along with her full name - mostly things related to her credit.
What you could do is put a fraud flag on her SS# with the credit bureaus - then changing it might not be necessary.

What a shock, blonde. ;)

Apply for online credit cards, insta-cash loans, etc.

Without the address that the social security is tied to though?

I'll probably tell her to do this.

Put it this way, if a shady character approached you on the street and asked for your social and full name would you give it to them? If you did wouldn't you be a little apprehensive?

The link I provided shows what to do to cover your bases. Criminals can be pretty clever sometimes.

AFAIK they are linked to birthdate, mother/father, county of birth. But I'm not a SS expert, I just play one on TV.

Ok, she closed her bank account and credit card and they are reissuing new ones. PayPal password and security questions have been changed. She's calling the credit agencies tomorrow to place a fraud alert on the accounts and ask them to verify with her ALL new accounts being opened. I will monitor her SS # statement to see if anyone is working under her name, etc.

Thanks guys for the information. Anything else I should remember?

Wow, she's going to give me A LOT of play for this... :D

good luck to her!

Someone above asked how people can be so gullible...
I got a similar phishing email the other day... the only reason I knew better was from experience on ATOT.

Otherwise, the email was very convincing. No misspelled words... site it directed to was a numerical URL (rather than www.scammerpage.com/paypal/...)

I'm still waiting for my inlaws to fall for it. Actually, I wonder if they already have.

i spent about 3 hours desperately looking for the relationship
"bikini girl surfing" <----> "paypal fishing scam"....and didnt find one...except that i like the idea to "losen up" random threads with random pictures of girls in bikinis :)

But then it dawned on me: "paypal fishing scam" <---> "girl surfing in water"......DOH :)
How could i be so blind :)

Edit: Aka..
"I have a qeuestion about my tax return"

(with some pics provided of my half-naked gf because she is the one i am filing jointly with. This will open a whole NEW area of exciting postings ! )

Edit2: Also...i just have a great idea....how could we somehow integrate Jenna Jameson into a beginner's guide to overclocking ? :) etc..etc....the possibilities are endless :)

My girlfriend is what most people would consider to be internet savvy.

That claim and clicking a link within an email don't mix.
