Paypal chargeback question

So I got my first ever chargeback on Paypal.

Sold an iPhone to someone on eBay. They paid. I shipped.

Before the iPhone arrived to it's destination, I got notified that the credit card company issued a chargeback against me. The reason is "Unauthorized Payment".

So the first thing that comes to my mind right now, is that someones credit card was stolen and used to buy my iPhone.

So the question is, am I screwed?

For your sake I hope you used a premiere and not a personal account.

If you used UPS you can attempt an intercept although if it has been a few days it might not work. If you used anyone else, you are pretty much fucked.

Who did you use to ship it? If it's UPS or FedEx I think you can call and change the delivery address. Have it shipped back to yourself.

Yes I did. Does that help me?

USPS. Dammit.

I got the email from Paypal, and quickly wrote a 3 page essay describing what happened and submitted it to the case.

If someones card DID get stolen, isn't it the credit card company's responsibility to "pick up the tab"? Especially if it wasn't reported lost/stolen by the card holder?

They're supposed to have a fraud protection team on your side if you do. 😉

Was the item over $250?

Yeah, $472.46 to be exact. That's good news.

CC company takes the money back from the merchant. In this case that's Paypal.

This happened.

I was fully covered by Seller Protection. Gave PayPal all documents they needed.

They said I never attempted to contact them, then they reversed the payment.

Now I'm -$300 on my PayPal account. I'm going to call them after work.. and cuss someone the fuck out.

Now I'm out $400 AND an iPhone.

I did not think paypal allowed USPS for protection since it does not have a "real" tracking number.

Since the chargeback was reason "Unauthorized Payment", I only had to provide proof of shipment. I did not need an approved tracking number or delivery confirmation.

Yea I don;t keep up with it as I don;t sell on eBay anymore cause of this mess.

Craigslist works fine for me and I get cash as soon as I hand over what I sell.

Good luck.

OP you are screwed. Your account will probably be temporarily suspended pending an investigation. Thats what happend to me when I Sold my PSP. I took a bit of money out of my paypal to buy something and now I am in the negatives but screw paypal I am not paying them. They paid I shipped. the address on the account was the same to were I was shipping it.

11.5 What is ?Proof of Shipment??

Online or physical documentation from a shipping company that includes all of the following:

The date the item is shipped.
The recipient?s address, showing at least the city/state or zip code (or international equivalent).
11.6 What is ?Proof of Delivery??
Online documentation from a shipping company that includes all of the following:

The date the item is delivered.
The recipient?s address, showing at least the city/state or zip code (or international equivalent).
Signature Confirmation for payments of $ 250 USD or more (see Foreign Currency Equivalents below).
11.7 What is ?Signature Confirmation??

Online documentation that can be viewed at the shipping company?s website and indicates that the item was signed for on delivery.

Hope you didn't just get delivery confirmation!

Sorry but that might have caused you $700. Never, ever use USPS to ship goods. They are the WORSE for businesses.

If the payment was under seller protection, there's a good chance you will get your money back.

If it isn't, you have just about zero chance of winning.
