They are designed to raise money for the couple? That's reason enough not to go. If someone tried that in Pittsburgh, they'd be sitting in an empty hall. People are eager to give shower gifts to a couple getting married, will bake hundreds of cookies for their reception, will line up free DJs, and give nice cash wedding gifts, but you don't try to get it by extortion. That would never fly. That's not what friends do around here, anyway.
To me it sounds like, "I'm getting married, so gimme some money."

edit: oh and things actually ARE different in other parts of the world - might want to remember that the next time you throw down your all-knowing attitude. people are eager to "bake cookies for the reception"? "extortion"? please tell me you're kidding.
