I finally weened my way off it about 3 months ago. The first week of withdrawals were the worst. Constant dizziness, nausea it was awful.

Glad I got off of it.

i have been to see a counselor / therapist / shrink - whatever you want to call it - twice. two 45-minute sessions. he thinks i am clinically depressed and he wants to start me off on Paxil.

pardon my french but F that noise. i'm not going to take anything like it. i will do cardio, i will change my diet, i will do anything... i'm just too scared to begin taking anything like that. i really don't think there is anything wrong with me to warrant medication 0_o

do some doctors jump the gun prescribing this stuff? what's the deal here.. he didn't give me any books to read, he seems like he isn't interested in working with me unless it's a combination of therapy and meds. i have my life in order, i'm just a little bummed out from time to time and feel like my moods are a bit unstable... isn't that pretty much normal? i sought counseling because i wanted to be confident and sure of myself headed into my next relationship... he says i have abandonment and trust issues and a gross sense of inadequacy towards women due to how my ex left me and other things that happened... i say all that is pretty standard fare. no one's perfect.. if I am in a funk, I don't think it is one that is deep or dark enough as to require SSRIs... 0_o

anyhoo. i'm not going to start taking them. i also cancelled my next therapy session. a couple sessions gave me some food for thought and stuff to focus on. i'm just not really agreeing with this guy's approach and have become skeptical due to the suggestion that i need medication after only two short sessions.

completely open to commentary....

My GP gave it to me when I told him I was under an extreme amount of stress. No counseling, nothing. Just, here you go!

I took it for about 6 months and it worked I guess. My wife said I kept my temper under control more and was more pleasant. It also increased my stamina in the bedroom like it was nobodies business.

But then things in my life got less stressful. So I stopped taking it. It was tough but I'm glad I did. Plus, my wife told me afterwards she preferred the 2min quickies we used to have. Here all along I thought women want it long and hard.

So, don't start.

I was on Paxil for a while but it caused misfiring of the old howitzer, so I switched to Effexor XR for a couple of years before weaning me of this once I learned to control my general anxiety otherwise.

Medical doctors prescribe drugs. That's what they do. Look up allopathy on google or something. With much success in many fields, of course.

Brain stuff: if you want meds, go to a Psychiatrist. That's an MD. That's what you're going to get, and very little else. If you don't want meds go to a Psychologist. That's a PhD. Can't prescribe meds. But more likely to give good therapy.

If you look at the PPI of most psychoactive medications, they say something like this:

There is no body of evidence available to answer the question of how long the patient treated with PAXIL should remain on it.
That was lifted from Paxil's PPI BTW...

Short term drug therapy with cognitive therapy is proven to be the most effective...

Think of the drugs as the duct tape of a repair and cognitive therapy as the long term fix...

I've seen some really jacked up people on psychoactive drugs long term... Some folks will never be "normal" and need those drugs, most have a bad period and the psychoactive drugs can help them over a rough patch...

do some doctors jump the gun prescribing this stuff?

I told my doctor I had headaches, she asked if I felt stressed, added a few more anxiety/depression questions, and after about five minutes of that, said she'd start me on an SSRI, I forget which one. I declined, rather surprised at how quickly she'd prescribe.
